But even if one were to concede that all countries doing bad things makes them equally bad, why would you want more surveillance by additional parties? Is an off brand phone that much better price/performance to get the extra eyeballs on your data?

Yes, they do still block handsets they don’t approve of. I had to switch carriers because AT&T decided to start blocking a OnePlus phone that I’d had on their network for years because T-Mobile started selling them through their store. I moved to Google and they got real lovely and wouldn’t release my phone number for over a week.

I've bought several Xiaomi phones for my mom, not sure if the CPP is spying on her but they work well for her and were much cheaper than comparable Samsung phones.

Mail day! Got this when it was at a bargain at $50, now higher. Some youtuber must have done videos to get the spikes:  https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003730697813.html Basic controls, middle is power, and up and down to scroll through captures (theres a shutter button on the top)  32*24 Resolution is GOOD for these pocket cameras, usually its a 8*8  Completely forgot it had a battery!  Hand  Beer can  Temps are a bit out of course, but more than enough for my liking to mainly check PCBs for dead shorts and whats being hot compared to the rest of the board.
