It's weird that "female" is such a red flag while "male" goes unnoticed but that's how language and the euphemism treadmill works I guess.

You say that but I often hear a silent "biological" in front of male so it makes me sideeye.

I think generally female is fine if its used as an adjective, it's only really a problem when someone's using it as a noun and tbh that's always been a clunky use of the word. Like, "Valentina Tereshkova was the first female cosmonaut" sounds ok, "Valentina Tereshkova was the first female in space" is ferengi talk.

Bobby Deluxe posted:Someone was asking about the hindu / muslim violence in Leicester, this seems to be a decent breakdown: I'd be wary of exactly what bits are 'imported' though, Hindutva is promoted by BJP in India, but local fascists are more than capable of standing in a big group and chanting nazi poo poo of their own accord. Some buses of various groups did apparently come from Bradford and Wembley in the name of 'community defence' but again you can always see that happening in these types of events, and I've also heard people try to pin the whole thing on 'outside agitators' and no, clean your front yard and talk to your neighbour. This bit is very on point though, white nationalists are having a field day and they can eat poo poo. https://twitter.com/sunny_hundal/status/1571943682697306113 Jaeluni Asjil posted:Genuine question: what is wrong with 'female'?

Noun as opposed to adjective has always struck me as derogatory. Think "black" or "jew" instead of "black person" or "Jewish person" Also, poors and olds (though I do like those terms a lot)

[quote="His Divine Shadow" post="526397993"] Didn't get that feeling myself, just felt like an honest assesment to me, without pulling any punches. The days of cheap energy are coming to an end, well they're gone already. It's market failure. I have an off grid solar house in Victoria, Australia (cold and cloudy by Australian standards, probably similar to UK south coast) My solar system has provided 4800kwh of power so far this year and I haven't paid a power bill in 3 years. The house is obviously more optimal than the average UK house but solar could be a hugely useful power resource here, especially with the electrification of transport.

What boggles my mind when reading that Byline Times article, and whenever reading about the US far right, and their lackeys over here is just how unrepentantantly evil they all seem. Ah, my local council (the office is literally around the corner from me) The former council leader was passed over for selection as parliamentary candidate and quit the party along with a couple of other councillors. That left the Greens as the largest coalition partner, so the new leader being a Green made perfect sense. But apparently voting for that was enough for more councillors to get the boot? Absolutely bizarre behaviour. 100% not voting Labour next time out, and might ever have to backtrack on my "no Greens" policy since they replaced Molly Scott Cato and the new guy has some modest shitposting chops. https://twitter.com/PeteKennedy/status/1570089012869697539?s=20&t=9GctIGFrECQ2awFNOTl0Xg

I have an off grid solar house in Victoria, Australia (cold and cloudy by Australian standards, probably similar to UK south coast) My solar system has provided 4800kwh of power so far this year and I haven't paid a power bill in 3 years. You can't extrapolate from your off grid home to all of society though, most of europe can't rely on solar power for half the year even if every house had solar panels (and there are environmental issues with that idea too). And when you bring in electrification of transport and other things, that makes the problem a magnitude worse. There's no way hosé we're gonna run anything like our current society on renewables without magic level energy density storage. This is why everything is falling apart now, renewables never worked in europe unless paired with natural gas (there are no storage solutions remotely on the horizon that can get rid of nat.gas, no not even that latest youtube video on the issue) and when that went up in price everything else fell down. We have five solutions for returning to something like what we've become used to and none are coming soon: -Natural gas becomes cheap again -Nuclear fission is built out massively (decade+ away) -Nuclear fusion (decades away) -Cheap mass scale storage (I think this one is further away than fusion or about in the same ball park) -Geothermal (If millimeter wave drilling works out this is the one to watch in a few years). So the next decade or so is gonna be about saving energy, unless we start buying russian gas again. edit, also a thread on the bad shape of the european energy grid: https://twitter.com/BurggrabenH/status/1567929340737863680 His Divine Shadow fucked around with this message at 15:56 on Sep 20, 2022 |

It seems more like some dude claimed that the balloon they were seeing sucked, and someone else could have made a better balloon instead of wasting everyone's time with a lovely one.
