Rarity posted:I'm an idiot, what is he expecting pension funds to do? Apparently the pension funds all have insurance against the government defaulting on the debt, but when the cost of government borrowing rises too sharply a clause kicks in and the pension funds have to pay an extra cost on the insurance. So he's saying that the pension funds have three days left to sell their bonds to the BoE so they don't get stuck with the extra charge.

It's going to be glorious e: My town has just had to cancel its carnival, which was meant to have taken place on Saturday, as the town council wasn't able to get permission from themselves to close the roads in time, due to them forgetting to process their own paperwork... and of course, there's absolutely nothing that anyone can do. Better luck next year I guess... fuctifino fucked around with this message at 00:48 on Oct 12, 2022 |

My brother-in-law just tested positive for covid. We all had vaccine boosters on Sunday (though he & my sister had flu jab too - I declined to have it the same time as I tend to react very badly to that so didn't want two at the same time). Anyway, he thinks he caught at an event on Friday and when he felt unwell earlier he thought it was the vaccines but when he got a sore throat this evening decided to test. Not sure what the protocol is if you have a covid jab and then 2 days later test positive for covid! I said he better try and call the doc tomorrow or send up smoke signals or whatever you have to do to speak to a doc these days!

I'd be interested in how much London is generalisable to the rest of the country - I live in a much more affordable part of the country where I can't imagine a land grab by the country's richest will make as much sense

The DPRK posted:Really enjoyed listening to this today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViY-zI3b5JQ For anyone who hasn’t gotten around to it: this was excellent. I feel quite ignorant not having clocked this before, but when they briefly alluded to the fact that the BoE’s inflation target excludes house prices, and this means effectively that official (if implicit) monetary policy is to continue increasing the house price : annual income ratio, it dawned on me just how hosed the whole situation is. Also the ending bit where he suggested the British economy is essentially neo-feudalist, rather than capitalist, didn’t seem too hyperbolic to me.

quote:he suggested the British economy is essentially neo-feudalist, rather than capitalist. Glad folk are coming around on this. The middle class is just the poor that won't admit it, the anglo-world middle class as we know it is an aberration arising from postwar social democracy, and [adamcurtis] they [/adamcurtis] are taking it back, one house at a time. Hah, you think, I'm clever, I'll just leave my house to my kids! What, so they'll inherit it in their 60s? No, sorry, your house is going to your end of life care where ownership will transition to a private landlord and then to a corporate landlord, and your kids will continue to Own Nothing. I don't see how that makes the system non-capitalist. The change from feudalism to capitalism was about coming to see power as rightly vested in owners, as opposed to people with special blood or divine blessings or whatever. The fact that ownership tends to concentrate over time (like other sorts of power) doesn't stop it being capitalist.

I think that's just swallowing capitalist rhetoric. We don't have serfdom because we're not allowed the land, let alone tied to it. We have standard capitalist 'work for us or starve' bondage.
