It is human ablative armor. Yeah, there's no way that's going to turn out how they think it. Those how ever many thousand they get to finish basic training* are still gonna be lead by the same impotent leaders they currently have on the fount, and they're going to be surrounded by incompetent untrained soldiers probably suffering really bad mental trauma from seeing everyone around them getting killed all the time for the last two month. *I have absolutely no confidence they will actually get anything other than the most half rear end'ed training at the very most. Why then did they stop mobilising in the cities, they can't honestly think that they've got enough 'high quality' troops to train up, right? That part seems most likely to be a gently caress up, like they didn't anticipate how poorly it would go over.

CONTENT WARNING: Thread content not related to the forums Someone I know teaches English online to Europeans, and maybe a quarter of the students are Russians (and many Ukrainians, too, so he's hearing stories from working professionals on both sides). One of his Russian students disappeared for a while and finally logged back in recently, since the lessons were pre-paid. He had some stuff to say: --The guy is computer toucher in one of the larger cities, working for the government. He heard about a possible coming mobilization, so he resigned from his government job in Russia, packed his stuff, and left the country. His resignation was fully accepted and signed. He told his neighbors he was leaving and why, and they all understood. --Mobilization begins soon after and a bunch of recruitment officers come to his apartment, but nobody's there, so they go to his neighbors and tell him he (the OP) needs to take his rear end to the military office to get sent for training because he's on the list. The neighbor tells the officers OP quit his job and he's long gone and to forget about him. --Guy gets a long email from his former government workplace stating that "oops, we didn't actually mean it when we said you could resign, so we still own you, and we demand you do your civic duty and get mobilized." --Officers come back to his apartment to check again and then tell the neighbor the same thing as the email and to pass the info along. --Guy gets another email demanding to know where he's hiding. He ghosts them instead of trying to argue with obvious liars. --Guy gets another email saying when he returns to Russia he'll be thrown in jail for a few years, if not immediately mobilized, or both mobilized AND jail. --Guy stops checking emails. Problem solved.

If he goes back he's going to jail. They tried to recruit his 54 year old dad, but he escaped in time to Uzbekistan. Coworker's mom is here in the US helping take care of some new kids (twins.) Re tightening of rules on pictures/bloodlust/etc. I want to see how it plays out but feels very intentionally designed to be weaponized against folks who post content, in a don’t post twitter threads of massacres so it’s easier for someone to deny bad things happening or post remotely positively if Ukraine reclaims a town, because both sides are “jointly responsible for this war”. Which are both problematic to me as a cudgel to obsifucabte Russians overwhelming singular responsibility. I’m tiptoeing around it a lot, but the version of the proposed rules feels very intentionally aimed towards silencing this thread. For content: Seems like Russian bloggers are desperate to get in someone’s good graces: https://twitter.com/ChrisO_wiki/status/1585587514383138817 Kadyrov admits a bunch of his folks got hit, claims they immediately assaulted some trees in a forest in retaliation: https://twitter.com/wartranslated/status/1585787307050803205

I wanna say a quick thing on this because people were discussing how to draw the line on jokes-vs-Ghoulism & thread got closed earlier before i could post m'post. I'm not trying to start a derail on it, but i feel like this could be a helpful metric for others to clarify wherd stuff generally gets icky. Also I care about people's mental health as there's definitely a slippery slope w/r/t humor+active warfare being processed and discussed without having prepared a healthy mindset for it A nice, clean delineation for this would probably be if the joke's not promoting a certain point of view on/related to the topic, and is also actually funny (which is subjective, but if multiple people don't find it funny and draw offense: it probably wasn't funny). i.e. A successful dark joke in the context of people dying or other such subjects will almost always be structured around the humor of the statement/observation/reference being made in itself, and the content of it will be centered on that aspect. Not on the people dying, how they're dying, nor celebratory/implicative of their deaths being good/funny in itself. [ Please do note that this very easily runs into conflict with the issue of invading Russian troops being neutralized being objectively good for the Ukrainian war effort. This makes it a poor setting for most jokes, and very easy to stumble into death-celebration territory. War is a terrible thing! It's important, for your own mental health, to remember: combat victories and the destruction of human beings are two very different things that often occur alongside eachother in war. Don't conflate the two, and try to be conscious to not be celebrating the wrong part, as that's a major route to dehumanization & ghoulin' around. It could happen to YOU. YOU YOU ] If a joke relating to people dying/suffering requires the reader to subscribe to a specific ideopolitical worldview in order to find funny, and will not be at all funny to anyone who does not, it's no longer a joke. That is the weaponization of humor to foster ideopolitical narratives, and when it's combined with people dying/suffering, that's when edgy jokes cross into reprehensible poo poo, every time Good example of well executed dark/edgy humor: the FYAD DOOM-activeshooter thread (Sorry for killing the joke, pretend you didn't see this if you read that thread ):it's taking a topic that is extremely difficult to make jokes about, and doing it successfully largely because it's not focused directly on people dying in school shootings and does not require a pro/anti perspective on any facet of the issue to find the thread funny. The topic is being used as a canvas for creative/absurdist humor by juxtaposing it against doom/fps tropes, and not to push any agenda nor celebrating or making light of people dying in itself. This is difficult to successfully do - and should be Low-effort/lazy jokes and sensitive topics are not a good match. If you're gonna try to go there, you gotta put in the work to do it well, or it's gonna stink FirstnameLastname fucked around with this message at 04:15 on Oct 28, 2022 |

Take this with a grain of salt because I'm not an expert on the system - but my understanding is that it's arbitrary: you put the target in the viewfinder and basically take a picture that it will use to home in on, and the missile continues taking images and comparing them to what it understood to be the target in the previous frame to set a new aim point. Don't put the flaming charcoal bucket in the "destroy this" brackets, it won't decide to target it.
