Yeah when I moved from one area of the US to another, the local Costco bananas went from good to bad. It’s hit or miss it seems.

It doesn't make any sense since the bananas all come from the same region.

The pork tenderloin is $2/lb and is basically steak if you don't overcook it. I think it's the best deal at Costco.

IDK but the Costco bananas at my new Costco aren’t as good as the old ones.

I’m not a banana supply chain expert but the brand on the bananas is different as well.

A long time ago I was working at a German bierhalle in New York, completely empty due to the early hour. In walk these two old timers (by which I mean easily in their eighties) who sit down at the bar. I get them drinks and they say that they are Brooklyn natives, WWII veterans, and the last surviving members of a drinking group of the same. They go out once a week to a different place each time and reminisce.

These guys start talking to each other and after a while one says to me:
"Ya ever been to Halifax?"
I say yeah and he tells this story of his first job, working for Dole on the Northern rail extension of the banana train. I am intrigued to say the least. Turns out they shipped this guy to Halifax midwinter with just a blazer and wool dress pants to work the banana train.

His job, at 15 years old, after putting on extra socks and borrowing a blanket, was to walk the entire line of cars and check the internal temperature. Not to make sure it wasn't frozen -- but to make sure it wasn't too hot.

Turns out, in addition to ethylene gas, ripening bananas produce a lot of heat. He would check the temperatures and open car doors to the winter to check the heat appropriately. He then proceeded to list (I swear I'm not making this up) more than two dozen banana varietals and their recommended temperatures for rail shipment.

I bought him his next drink, and we had some fun talking about the Cavendish banana and the Gross Michel and fake banana flavor and bananas he ate in the Philippines where he was during the war. Then he and his buddy left to go to the home and fall asleep at like 4pm.

Moral is there a lot more going into banana quality than the same region of origin.

Costco is kind of cool, if you pay your employees enough to live on and give them benefits so that they don't have to worry about how to survive in their daily lives then it turns out they don't quit their jobs and can make sure that the business is not going to fail. Imagine that??
