Russia is claiming the have evacuated all men and material safely across the Dnipro. Seeing a lot of these twitter feeds stating otherwise, and not seeing much in regards to combat footage that we seen during the push around Kharkiv. We know how trustworthy the Russian MoD is, but it does seem like Ukraine has not been pressing the attack to the extent in which they could and really making things diffilcult for the Russian retreat. While we probably will not be told the exact reasons or story of what is all currently going on it does really seem like Russia made some sort of deal with Ukraine to let them withdraw relatively unharrassed. If so, the failure to capture/destroy the Russian forces on their side of the river could come back to bite them. Truly a Dumbkirk.

They could have planned around this, maybe retake Kerson relatively intact using inexperienced troops while regrouping elite brigades up north to cause havoc again. An unharmed city is a hell of a prize seeing what happened to other places.

The original (and until 2005, the ONLY rocket available for MLRS) was an unguided dispenser with between 500 and 600 submunitions, depending on subtype. During the Gulf war it acquired several nicknames, among them “The Corps Commander’s sawed-off,” and “grid-eraser.” ATACMS was deployed in small numbers just in time for the gulf war, but it wasn’t until relatively recently that precision guided munitions became the primary payload for MLRS and HIMARS. Both systems retain the ability to fire unguided munitions, but the Army has stated that it is in the process of divesting all remaining stocks of non-precision MLRS family munitions.

Given how wildly the media mood is swinging around this the past 24 hours, I suspect it’ll take us quite a bit more time to receive any actual details of the Russian retreat, or exactly how AFU rolled back in. So far I have not seen any evidence for Russians left behind on the right bank. I am pretty sure they were in fact 90% gone already by Wednesday when the official announcement came. We will see how much damage Ukraine was able to do at the staging points for the crossings, but right now this is looking like a very well executed withdrawal with minimal losses by the Russians.

I do think there's a lot of fog of war right now and triumph is premature. Capturing Kherson is an enormously positive development, but there is only extremely limited evidence that thousands of troops will be left behind.

OddObserver posted:That's an account that leans to over-optimism, to put it mildly. 20k was the upper estimate for the number of Russian troops on the west bank before there was talk of withdrawal so talking about 20k being trapped implies that Russia has evacuated 0 which doesn't really make sense. I'm sure there was some chaos in the late stage withdrawal. It's a difficult process that requires a lot of coordination and discipline to execute well. But it seems like they got most of their equipment and people out or Ukrainian forces is uncharacteristically not posting about POWs and trophies. Anyway, it's a good day for Ukraine. They absolutely needed to clear the West bank of any Russian bridgeheads before they could even contemplate a negotiated peace.

If Russians really managed to pull the main body of troops without effective interdiction then that's a lot more competent of them than anyone would have expected, especially given how their problems stemmed from how difficult it was to supply the troops with Ukrainian interdiction. They would have to have been really lucky though if there were no losses in the evacuation - stragglers, friendly fire or stepping in own mines in darkness, equipment failure etc.

As a general aside, I don't know how well claims of "massive Ukrainian victory and thousands of POWs" lines up with Ukrainian official statements about their caution entering Kherson and the possibility of a trap. If Ukraine was publicly being slow and careful about their advance, the only way the Russians could have lost that badly was if the damage was mostly self-inflicted. Which given Russian performance so far isn't ENTIRELY to be ruled out, but... Also, even if there are troops that are panicking, the thing about panic is that it magnifies defeat. Talk to the first people running away from any battle throughout history and you'll find that it was a complete, total, utter defeat, an absolute massacre, no matter which side you're talking to. Private Ivan Ivanovich might only be seeing the folks immediately around him panicking and then extrapolating that to mean the entire army had lost control, despite not actually being aware of the state of the rest of the army.

Also they banned TLoU because.. the character came out as a lesbian in TLoU2? Or did they ban both games? Or because the actress/character model for the girl is a lesbian IRL? Fallout also, don’t remember anything LGBT in 1 or 2 except that you could sleep with a prostitute regardless of the sex of the player character. And banning fallout and dragon age but not Mass Effect? E: I realize I'm looking for way more logic than was actually applied. Also I guess Russians can't even legally buy video games anymore anyway from European, North American, or Japanese publishers (i.e. 99 of them?), so the ruling has like zero effect since everyone pirates everything in the first place. There is footage of Russians walking across the pontoon bridge in a long line this morning so there was a constant evacuation until the very last minute. It doesn't seem like anyone was really "trapped" given that they were still evacuating this late, and the bulk of the city was mostly deserted by the time the UA arrived. However, the crossing points were being hit with artillery all night. We've not seen any footage from the landing points or the entry to the bridge, but I imagine that is where the real losses will be. There could also be a substantial number of Russian troops scattered around who have just decided to hide as civilians. They'll take a while to track down.
