They draw that distinction. And so clearly, I’m a Black progressive Democrat concerned with addressing racial and social and economic injustice with the fierce urgency of now. It is going to be insane when the Republicans start accusing Biden of sleeping with prostitutes; paying off said prostitutes; refusing to pay contractors on his multiple real estate properties; over estimating his worth to get favourable loans; being exactly like Trump but just not Trump.

What’s the problem with Jeffries? I asked. Shahid sent a link to Jeffries’s political donations, which lists his top donors’ professions as securities and investment and real estate. I asked Jeffries about that. “It’s time for the virtue signalers to stop shadowboxing on social media,” he told me. “Recruit a candidate, put on the boxing gloves, get in the ring, and we can work this out on the ground in the Eighth Congressional District.” “Virtue signalers” being deployed the second somebody wants to talk about being beholden to corporate donors is hilarious. Immediate pivot to right wing tropes about how nobody actually has a moral or ethical core.

To replace another senator, Dianne Feinstein no less, with a (straight!) white man would set off a firestorm. Of course, the most democratic thing would be to fill the seat with someone without career ambitions, like Jerry Brown who could just serve out the term, so there could be an open election and the people could make their own choice. There's only been one open election for a California senate seat in the last 30 years, Harris's. One governor making two lifetime Senate appointments is a bit much.

Jeffries' project here seems to be to ensure the torch passes but the flame remains unchanged, and openly stating that if anybody to his left wants a word in anything they're going to need to go to war to get it is probably the smartest way to do that. As leader of the minority he's not got much he can do, but putting the screws to his left when he knows they'll vote for whatever he wants anyway also gets the moderates on his side. Margins like this mean any bloc with more than a handful of people can play hardball, but anybody around now has already had this chance so it's already known who matters and who doesn't. Things are likely to get a whole lot more cynical and I don't think the House actually-left-of-centers are up to the challenge. I'm just glad to see that the finance, rent seeking, and literal vampires sectors will continue to be represented, those plucky little underdogs. "Virtue signalers" is straight up right-wing reactionary framing designed to discredit all the stuff even he was saying is important, but I'd be amazed if we heard the first word from anybody in the party or press about that. Certainly an interesting way to make it plain what your priorities are.

She made the smart play here, going out on a high note and keeping her word. It's difficult to overstate how much Pelosi has been Kobe for the Democrats. She'll be sorely missed. There's a lot of naivety from people who think having the correct opinions on the issues means you can just walk in and do that job, but that's exactly how you take a juggernaut trifecta and end your big talk GOP revenge fantasy with an embarrassing wet fart tax cut and jack poo poo else. Nothing matters if you can't wrangle people and get things done. Hakeem Jeffries has a lot of support, and a good rep for this position, but frankly it's incredibly irritating to have someone from New York coming into this right now. I wouldn't trust NY Dems to do my laundry at this point. If you're going to be a shithead moderate at least try to actually be good at it. None of that may be related to his Congressional operation but after that embarrassing dumpster fire performance in New York it's gonna take some evidence to see if he can fill Pelosi's shoes. For anyone who wants to read more about how Hakeem Jeffries might do as a Pelosi replacement, this article has some good background. He's been prepping for this for a while, and already has his own whip operation in place so he'll probably end up being fine. https://twitter.com/jmart/status/1593295607480950784 -Blackadder- fucked around with this message at 20:45 on Nov 17, 2022 |

Pete Aguilar is also running for a leadership spot. I don't know very much about him. So, I can't really say much more about him than Google can. His general bio: - 43 - Hispanic - From Southern California. - Seems to be a generic southern California Dem. - Was one of the Jan. 6th Investigation committee members and led one of the hearings. - Used to be the Mayor of Redlands, California. He's a member of some very fun caucuses: - Latino-Jewish Caucus - Diabetes Caucus - Work for Warriors Caucus - Former Mayors Caucus - Wine Caucus - Native American Caucus - Steel Caucus I guess it's good that the average age of leadership will probably be in the late 40's and early 50's instead of early 80's. Not seeing anything especially great about any of the candidates so far, though. Katherine Clark supports Medicare for All and seems pretty good, I guess?

In addition to the partisan gerrymanders, many states have completely legal and in fact court-mandated funky-shaped districts drawn to make sure a substantial racial minority, most often black folks, have a district where they can reliably elect a candidate of their choice. One of the big election-rules dramas this time was some states deliberately drawing fewer of these than they were supposed to, which the Supreme Court responded to by pretending to hear their mom calling them to dinner.
