Those in the Australian govt who decided to cut subsidies because businesses should stand on their own, while still happily funneling equal amounts to their mining buddies? Local Holden management over the years, GM US management? I'm honestly not sure of the path they should have taken. I know the European sourced small cars like the Astra and Vectra weren't always the most reliable, but they were a mile better than the awful Daewoo poo poo. They clearly missed the SUV train until the Craptiva - should they have fought for RHD versions of the smaller US SUV products? I'm not so sure they would have fared well. Continued development of AWD versions into the VE and onwards? I've never looked at how they did the Adventura/Crewman, could they have done AWD but normal ride height versions? Developed the VE/VF based Territory competitor they almost did? The exportability of the VE to LHD markets was always a huge advantage Ford never had for their local product. I don't think a new Monaro would have saved them, but hey, halo car? Plus the Coupe 60 looked awesome, imagine if they managed to ship the side pipes.

Those in the Australian govt who decided to cut subsidies because businesses should stand on their own, while still happily funneling equal amounts to their mining buddies? Local Holden management over the years, GM US management? The actual thing that killed Holden was GM accounting. Holden was making pretty good profits but GM had the idea that they should charge Holden licensing fees for using Holden's own designs. Which sent a lot of money to GM and left Holden to lose money as a result. There were no need for subsidies, GM could have chosen to not leech billions and that is how GM murdered Holden. Fun fact - Opel was a huge loss maker until the day PSA bought them. Then Opel made a billion the next year. Oh hey you guessed it, GM were also sucking them dry too. Both Oepl and Holden were being used to make the USA operations look healthier than they were. gently caress GM. Jonny Nox posted:There are 0 SUVs in this image. Lotta station wagons though. The traditional term is "offroader", this is the kind of vehicle that used to have a significantly lower car tax because the army would confiscate it when the need arises. The modern variant is called "streetoffroader".

Jonny Nox posted:edit: but to answer the original question, Crossovers are popular because they look like the car every wishes they drove (either a F-150 or a Land Cruiser) but are actually the car they should be driving (a Sedan) Crossovers have a lot of undeniable utility value. If you want a school run / station run or shopping trolley there's not much that is actually better for the purpose - they are mostly tall hatchbacks. The issues start to pile up when you look at the dynamics of a tall on stilts car, the fact most of them are far less able to shove poo poo in like the older original crossovers like a Forester and lose out big time in any real offroad ability compared to those earlier crossovers too but that's more about us who care about such things and not the great amount of car buyers that dont give a fat rip about such things, even if their new shitbox is fundamentally worse than a crossover from 15 years ago

Further: Nah shove it, corporate dickheads. You don't even offer us anything to buy, apart from theoretically a C8 (haven't seen one) or a hacked up Silverado. We could get a hacked up Camaro too, but almost no one bothered since all the work you had to do moving the steering wheel made it like 20-30% more than a Mustang, so people just bought those instead and they appear to have given up.
