𝐀𝐓𝐎𝐌𝐈𝐂 𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐑𝐘 posted:

It is rather amusing to see how, after high-profile incidents, there are suddenly many experts on every conceivable subject, from conducting counter-intelligence to working out the basing of strategic aviation.

The problem with these people is not that they are asking questions, which can be more than reasonable - for example, why all the Russian heavy bombers are concentrated at literally a couple of airfields - the problem is their absolute lack of any basic knowledge and basic factual knowledge of their own country and its armed forces.

So, why did it happen the way it did with the Engels Air Base? The answer is simple and prosaic - there are no more airfields in the Russian Federation whose infrastructure would be suitable for servicing aircraft of this class on a regular basis. There are a number of airfields capable of receiving strategic bombers for refuelling, but not to sustain them for long periods of time - so it is physically impossible to disperse the aircraft.

Preflight maintenance, for example of the Tu-160, takes a total of several days and requires a large number of qualified personnel and specialised equipment. In Soviet times, this was not very difficult, but those times have passed and they're not coming back, and for modern Russia, mass organisation of such processes is too complicated and costly.
Moreover, it has never been planned to invest resources in the expansion of strategic aviation infrastructure due to a complete lack of practicality. Russian strategic aviation is primarily an element of prestige - it has long ceased to be a full-fledged military instrument. It is a collection of deeply obsolete aircraft and no less obsolete aviation weapons, created for doctrines and tasks, the implementation of which has been impossible for more than 30 years for a number of objective reasons (I'll give a hint - the trend towards low-visibility in this class of aviation appeared for a reason).

For exactly the same reason strategic bombers have been delegated the task of striking Ukrainian infrastructure (although initially primarily the Navy): their resource will be exhausted in the coming years anyway, stocks of older types of cruise missiles are huge and unnecessary, and they are totally unsuitable for the "nuclear strikes on the strongholds of Western imperialism" adored by the patriotic public.

So the search for some deep morality in this story is utterly pointless.

Both sides aren’t that different. Strategic bombers at least until more recently were part of the nuclear triad but generally seen as obsolete. They are there for the purposes of deescalation after both sides blow their load.

Obviously, the b-2 exists eventually the b-21 will exist but they are bombers in search of a mission.

We don’t have the full info on it so it is hard to say but it for the most part seems a smaller and cheaper b-2. The aim is to replace the entire bomber fleet but it is hard to say what it would bring to the table besides more stealth although at least the b-2 probably has been trackable by both the Russians and the Chinese for a while.

Raskolnikov38 posted:

Yeah but it doesn’t seem to make much of a different in a strategic bomber besides saving crew. I guess you could argue a even larger fleet of stealth bombers would allow the US to hit more targets but the second the Russians start tracking them, they (at least should) will start sending orders out.

Certain sailors are absolutely primarily tasked with nothing more than constantly chipping paint/rust off and repainting as seagoing rust prevention. Boatswains mate that sort of thing. They might touch guns on occasion or even join for that reason but a chipper and a painter they shall forever be.

As a person who owns a metal boat: can confirm

Most (all?) boats not made of aluminum for specific design reasons (weight, corrosion resistance, etc) are made from mild steel, which rusts like a bitch

Newer primers and paints are better, but condensation + leaks and just exposure to humid salty air causes the stuff to fall apart. There's a reason why most consumer boats are fiberglass - the hull will last two or more re-engining with literally no maintenance

On a steel boat there is always some part of the boat that needs paint removed and repainted; in the worst areas they eventually just cut out the bad parts and weld in patches. Constant struggle to keep those things floating and fully functional

Marine grade paints and lubricants are indeed miraculous things considering the hostile environment they operate in but the sea is merciless and unyielding.

Want to make a non-slip path at your home or workplace? May I suggest marine paint? Wear breathing protection and stay upwind when applying though, holy poo poo.

If the US destroys the EU's economies sufficiently to drop GDP then all countries can reach the 2% NATO spending target without increasing spending.

Boats are made from almost anything you can imagine including concrete, certainly more steel types than just mild.

No, why do you think that? Airplanes are interconnected, and the wingtips of a TU-22M3 are rather near to the aft of the aircraft, where we can clearly see that both horizontal stabs were torn up and shorn, as well as the engines and portions of the tail assembly getting hit. I'd be surprised if there wasn't any damage to the wing.

I just thought this was a very funny claim to make, given the photos we have:

I bet a lot of components on this particular Backfire are damaged. That tends to happen when the rear end end of a plane gets shorn off. I would bet it has all kinds of damage, including the tail assembly, engines, probably that port-side wing, etc.

Look when Russia said there was light damage and actually there was fairly light damage it shows they can't be trusted and their airforce is weeks away from running out of planes.
