When I was 17, my father was so stupid, I didn't want to be seen with him in public. When I was 24, I was amazed at how much the old man had learned in just 7 years.

Honestly unsure? I'm more than happy to help haul poo poo but I'm pretty sure there's paid help for that, so mostly just going up to the base camp, staying a night there, getting some pictures and enjoying the stay for a bit, then peacing out before the dangerous stuff?

Yeah I did the AC! I took that flickr down due to privacy issues but if anyone is curious about the AC I'd be happy to share the pictures!

What are you talking about? You can get one or both kinds of edema, you can get frostbite, you can get left for dead. There are all kinds of tangible rewards.

You can also impress the heck out of the middle manager you report to, who will announce it in the next staff meeting and your co-workers will all have to pretend to be very impressed! You'll be golfing with the junior VP in no time.

I suppose there is a little obstacle for my dream in that it is in the Abkhazian breakaway republic occupied by Russia so kind of hard to reach for many westerners. But maybe one day...

Been reading a bunch of cave diving stuff and it reminds me a lot of reading about everest. particularly the death of Dave Shaw which isnt really cave exploration but just diving really deep (in a sinkhole) and then having similar crisis to mountaineering but because of extreme high pressure.

Pallas's Cats are the best.

“The idea of a Pallas’s cat sneering at elite climbers from behind a rock is truly warming my heart,” she wrote.

We will be cruel
And through our cruelty
They will know who we are
Macabre thought, but I wonder how much clean up would be done if everyone took just a chunk of some discarded bodies and materials every descent. Obviously removing things whole is a lot of effort for one's altitude-dying body, but what if you just took a boot?

The moral and ethical implications would mean this will never work, of course.

People don't do it for the material rewards, it's all about the sense of utterly fulfillment when you finally achieve that hardest of feats, joining in on the utterly wild Yeti orgy that's going on up on the peak, 24/7.

That's what "summiting" Everest is all about.
