I'm a couple weeks late on it, but the new Enslaved fuckin whips.

Their last few albums after Riitiir were a mixed bag, but they've finally settled into the groove of their new(est) lineup. It sounds like those quarantine streaming performances of their old stuff revitalized them a bit.

Where should I start with Insomnium? I got Enslaved tickets but it's a co-headline tour with them and I'm not too familiar with their stuff.

Insomnium are maybe the most consistent melodeath band out there other than Dark Tranquillity so you can't really go wrong jumping in anywhere or just going chronologically. Above the Weeping World is probably my personal favorite, but if you're going to see them on tour they'll probably be playing a grip of songs off their album that just dropped a couple weeks ago so might be worth familiarizing yourself with that album.

I was never enjoying it. I only eat it for the nutrients.
Maybe I'm a huge dork, but Above the Weeping World carries all the production tropes of a time when everybody was mastering albums to sound good through tinny iPod earbuds and over-gained cassette deck adapters. It's really trebly and brickwalled to poo poo, and as much as I like the songwriting, my ears are exhausted after about 5-10 minutes of it.

To my ears, the mix is great. The mastering is dogshit (those highs are so distorted what the gently caress).

I'd love for every band from that era to go back and remaster their albums with extra dynamic range. Scar Symmetry's Holographic Universe is one of my favorite discs ever, but listening to it on headphones is impossible.

Saw Fear Factory last night - they still slap. I was stoked because they played 'zero signal' which, to my sleuthing, was my intro to heavy metal (Thanks Mortal Kombat movie!)

The new singer, Milo, is good - it sounded like he may have been struggling a bit. I'm willing to attribute it to his first big tour though.

Dino looks pretty rough these days, glad I got to see them now.

The drummer is the guy from Havok and he, pun intended, totally thrashes.

Static X was there and that was also super cool - they were a pivotal band of my youth. ZER0 (sp?) mark 2 looks pretty awesome, and the playing was tight. I know some folks don't like the whole 'new staticx' thing, but I think it's a good memorial, and as someone who didn't get to see them back in the day, I appreciate the chance.

The other bands (Society1 and Dope) were meh, but I was never into Dope so grain of salt.

yeah, i think a term for something being good like slaps, is pretty easily adopted, whereas "no cap" is a bit more youth culture centric and also is likely to be shorter lived

Better yet, reject trends and create alternatives:

Slaps = Smacks
Lit = Flames
Slay = Impale
No Cap = True Bald
Bestie (who tf says this?) = Bitch
Fam = Ritual
Stan = Bardo
Yeet = [no alternative just say throw like a normal person]
Skrrt = [put a gun in your mouth and pull the trigger]
