I think if you had to pin a definition on it, it's probably more about what it's not than what it is. It's not 26-episode seasons. It's not on broadcast television. Episodes aren't self-contained storylines, but rather one single all-encompassing season-long story.

Like most secondary genre descriptors, it made sense for the first few examples of it, then made less and less sense as more people did it. But it still has its distinct trademarks even if they are no longer particularly "prestigious". The main thing is that it's divorced from the traditional seasonal schedule: 24-ish episodes every year starting in autumn, with only a handful of episodes produced before the season begins airing. All the other stuff kind of flows out of that, including the increased confidence in their ability to develop a season-long arc... a confidence which is often misplaced.

I absolutely had that book, and read and re-read it. I will say that the kind of nitpicking they do in those books is much more goodnatured than it is nowadays. I never got the sense that the authors were in anyway complaining zoux fucked around with this message at 21:36 on Mar 24, 2023 |

I haven't watched the PIC S3 yet, I am waiting until its completely out, but in my books it seems that they at least lean into the Good Stuff from the canon-adjacent (more popular STO ships and items, arguably the more popular story elements from STO, ENT S5 production notes...) than just making GBS threads all over it and redesigning stuff on a whim like DISCO did. They at least take the effort to try to make the show part of the Star Trek storyline.

Craptacular! posted:Anyway, Picard S3 deciding to cloak a Fed starship and the Defiant II being at the museum shows just how dumb it was for DS9 to blow up the original Defiant and then roll out an identical copy. that was to establish the breen as being more dangerous than the jem'hadar though, who were already shown to have been able to easily take out a galaxy class ship. if you follow the show's logic for the defiant class existing then the breen were also more dangerous than the borg so in context i think it worked, plus i also don't think they really intended for the defiant to show up again outside of DS9. it doesn't really have the same reverence that an enterprise does, even among star trek fans (as far as i can tell, anyway)

Like, okay this is a nitpick that deserves to be in one of the books but it leapt out at me as a way to highlight this thing. In S3E1 Picard pulls out the ressikan flute from the Inner Light episode. It's one of the very best episodes of TNG. Even decades later it still makes me all misty eyed. It's a very popular episode. In fact the flute from that episode sold for $48,000 at auction. It was one of the highest priced items from TNG, and as far as I can see the only things that beat it out were ship models. Clearly they knew about the flute being this big deal so they had to have it in their show. But since it was sold, they had to make a new one. But it looks like they made it based off someone's description of what they remembered it looked like. They didn't even just....look at the episode!   And it's not complicated. It's totally non-functional. They just needed some vaguely tube-ey shaped things and a bit of machining.
