I WILL CUT OFF BOTH OF MY ARMS BEFORE I VOTE FOR ANYONE THAT IS MORE POPULAR THAN BERNIE!!!!!
In some cases I have noted "Landlord good" or "Landlord bad," because there is great variation in what the slum-dwellers say about their landlords. I found—one might expect it, perhaps—that the small landlords are usually the worst. It goes against the grain to say this, but one can see why it should be so. Ideally, the worst type of slum landlord is a fat wicked man, preferably a bishop, who is drawing an immense income from extortionate rents. Actually, it is a poor old woman who has invested her life’s savings in three slum houses, inhabits one of them, and tries to live on the rent of the other two—never, in consequence, having any money for repairs.

It got lost among everything else but this is infuriating even a day later. It's bad enough that desperate migrant children are forced to work, and that even when this labor abuse is uncovered the children and their families often end up in the cross-eyes of the US immigration system. This is all tolerated so it probably shouldn't be surprising that conservative lawmakers are trying to broadly legalize child labor and make it more widespread. But this is evil villain stuff:

quote:

The Iowa legislation is particularly dangerous because it would exempt employers from civil liability in the event of a youth’s injury or death on the job — even in cases of employer negligence — if the teen was participating in a school-approved “work-based learning program.”

Employers already flout child labor laws at record rates, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
What are the obvious consequences of doing that.

Here's the actual text in an earlier version of the proposed bill for reference:

It looks like the liability immunity was weakened in later versions of the bill but it's clear what they want.

Also legislators do not write legislation anymore, that bill was given to them pre-written by the donor class.

Post the biscuit recipe, coward

Its not a very complicated recipe.

3 c all purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1 tbs baking powder
1 tbs sugar
6 tbs butter, diced up real small, cold
Between 1c and 1.25 c of buttermilk, cold
1/4 c of milk for brushing the biscuits so they brown in the oven

Bake at 425 degrees for 15-20 minutes

Makes about a dozen biscuits

Whisk together the dry ingredients, dump the butter into the dry ingredients and work it in by hand until it looks crumbly. Just kinda squish the butter and then roll it into the flour, but don't work it so long that the butter melts from the heat of your hands. This is the part you get better at with experience. Add a cup of buttermilk and half rear end mix with a fork or something until it starts coming together. Don't do a good job mixing, don't knead it, try to work the dough as little as you can. Use the other quarter cup of buttermilk if the dough won't come together, or there's a bunch of loose flour still left in the bowl. Dump your dough out on a floured surface or a silicone baking sheet and roughly shape it into a sheet about a half inch thick. Use a rolling pin if you have one. Ideally you should see pale little dots of butter in the dough as you roll it flat. Fold that sheet over itself in thirds like a letter, roll it back to 1/2 inch thick. Repeat two more times. Use a biscuit cutter to cut your dough for round biscuits or just a sharp knife for square biscuits. The important thing is that you cut the dough, which makes it easier for the biscuit to expand and look nice. Use something so your biscuits won't stick to a baking sheet - flour, corn meal, parchment, whatever - and give your biscuits an inch or so of clearance on all sides. Brush the tops with milk before putting the biscuits in if you feel weird about eating pale biscuits.

Also I didn't realize leaving dough out for 12ish hours was an option, I thought it would overferment.

one of the more flexible parts of baking is learning how long you can push it to develop flavor. The longer you let the dough go, the more flavor it has.
