There was also a lot of misinformation going around. To my knowledge, it's still a little unclear what actually happened that night (besides the victim being shot), but the narrative going around at the time, in the quote from Elise there, seems to have been completely false, and possibly an outright lie by the killer to cover their rear end. I'm in that block of linked quotes and I'm happy that, even with the completely false information, I was pushing back on the thread and saying "you know, this is still a tragedy, right?" I'll fully repudiate and apologize for the part where I said that it seemed like an unavoidable tragedy, which was based on bad information that I really should have been less credulous of. I was active in the protests in the area (though I wasn't present that night, and wasn't deeply involved enough to be in the Signal chats where the narrative was being passed around) and there was a real energy of wanting to show that the people could do it better than the state, and that definitely spilled over into the response to the tragedy. Not an excuse; only an explanation.
