oh hey are we doing continuity of consciousness chat again because the human mind is an ongoing process running on a biological substrate that changes but does not stop when unconscious/asleep and as far as I know has never been successfully restarted once completely stopped so if you halt the process completely then start up a new identical process on identical substrate, that first process is loving dead and the second one is a copy hope this helps I guessssss

it gets trickier if you can somehow restart the process on the exact same substrate. is Robocop still Murphy?

Turns out the reason Harry Kim never got promoted is because Janeway overheard him talking bullshit about how you die every time you use the transporter and a new you replaces the dead you, so she decided to honor his beliefs by resetting his service record every time he came back from an away mission.

drat, I guess that’s the last word right there. It’s fortunate that it’s so exactly analogous to modern computers too.

Murphy was always Robocop.

yea nah if my substrate it totally destroyed and an exact copy is made i'm still the exact same person when I wake up after being remade because from my perspective i'm exactly the same and my perspective is the only one that matters.

So, uh... followup to the last post.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KXU2Ob8gYY

...is the Roddenberry Archive making a sequel to Generations? Is this a semi-official fan-film by them, or is it "canon"? Seems like maybe it's a prequel to the end of Picard season 3 with the D recovery vehicles? And is that Daystrom? What?

e: Huh. This says it's a little short film adaptation of a moment from Ashes to Eden and a prequel to Picard season 3. There's also a bunch of other stuff in there, including a live-action Arex from TAS:

They are inconvenient to the talking point; therefore irrelevant. I assume they were born dead and died alive.

It wasn't scheduling; Star Trek III came out in 1984 and Alley first started appearing on Cheers in 1987. Nimoy was not a fan of her work in The Wrath of Khan, nor did he like that Meyer's script said that she was half-Romulan (which is why Alley's portrayal is so emotional). He made the choice to replace her with Robin Curtis.

The Fifty Year Mission also has some quotes from the production office claiming she was asking for the same money as Shatner and Nimoy. Then again there's also some really catty stuff in that book from Deborah Arakelian (Harve Bennett's assistant, from what I recall) about Alley leaving the shoot to get her boobs done, which I'm pretty sure doesn't line up either, so it's probably all bullshit.

The Fifty-Year Mission books are really good, but some of the quotes are indeed absolute bullshit. In particular, ignore anything said by Marc Cushman.

Alley always claimed that they offered her less for III than she made on II, so she decided to walk away (and this got parroted in Shatner's Star Trek Movie Memories, another book that is 90 percent bullshit outside of direct quotes). But it was all Nimoy; he wanted Saavik to be played as a full Vulcan.

Apparently the people behind Stage 9 are involved in this. They are also making a TTS that uses Majel Roddenberry voice, you can hear a sample of it if you click the about section https://roddenberry.x.io/. (This is something she explicitly wanted to be made.)

That is super cool. When I was watching them I grumbled that this must have been why Stage 9 got hit with the C&D. Very cool that they appraiched them to make the official version.

Still, they should hire a competent marketing person because their site and YT presence is incredibly confusing.

As cool as that teaser video is (I'm not watching PIC so I don't have an idea what it's referencing beyond Generations), I have really mixed feelings about deepfaking actors into movies. This seems to be done more respectfully than Carrie Fisher in Rogue One, though.

Stage 9 got hit with the C&D because they blew their load early and went public with it before it was anywhere close to done. CBS had to go after them just as a matter of trademark defense.

There's a reason I only made vague hints to how Picard S3 was going to go. I'm unemployed and broke at the moment, last thing I need is a process server knocking on my door here in Iowa giving me notice of a lawsuit.

I liked it, it felt respectful enough to me. They didn't try to superimpose a bad voiceover or dumb cheesy lines. Roddenberry Archive isn't some megacorp making billions.

Leia was a mixed bag for me. Cheesy rear end obvious "Hope" line but it was close enough to her death that it felt like they could be doing it as a tribute/memorial.

But then again, same movie, bringing back Cushing as Tarkin for a cameo after he's been dead 25 years felt ghoulish.

Edit: jeez, i must have my memory backwards about when Fisher died. still more weird than transgressive at that point though.

Yeah, if they had put words in Spock's mouth that might have come across more cheesily/badly than what we got. I don't have a problem with the Roddenberry Project, but bringing back long-dead celebrities for new movies in general I'm not as sure about.
