I have no idea what this has to do with minimum wage in Hong Kong, but I guess media has to tie misery back to US wage slaves somehow.

quote:

The situation in Hong Kong is similar to employees' plight globally — workers are struggling to cope with high costs of living amid soaring inflation.

In the US some retired seniors are reentering the workforce and taking on service jobs for extra income, USA Today reported in April. In the UK, some people are drinking protein shakes as meal replacements and batch cooking to save on grocery costs, Insider's Pete Syme reported in December 2022.

Over Half of Medicare Coverage in MA Plans for First Time
Health Payer Specialist - May 3, 2023
Enrollment in Medicare Advantage has soared over the past 15 years, representing more than half of enrollees in the Medicare program for the first time this year, according to a new Kaiser Family Foundation analysis. The foundation attributes the growth to such factors as the lure of extra benefits offered by private plans, such as vision, hearing, and dental services, “the simplicity of one-stop shopping," and the potentially lower out-of-pocket costs.

I'm losing my mind.

Two 10-year-old children were found working at a Louisville McDonald’s restaurant — sometimes until 2 a.m. — the US Department of Labor said Tuesday.

The revelation was part of an investigation into the child labor law violations in the Southeast. The agency also found three franchisees that own more than 60 McDonald’s locations in Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland and Ohio, “employed 305 children to work more than the legally permitted hours and perform tasks prohibited by law for young workers,” the Labor Department said in a statement.

The franchisees, Bauer Food, Archways Richwood and Bell Restaurant Group, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. CNN has also reached out to McDonald’s for comment.

“Investigators from the department’s Wage and Hour Division found two 10-year-old workers at a Louisville McDonald’s restaurant among many violations of federal labor laws committed by three Kentucky McDonald’s franchise operators,” the release said. “Investigators also determined two 10-year-old children were employed – but not paid – and sometimes worked as late as 2 a.m.”

The three franchisees face a combined $212,754 in civil money penalties for the child labor violations, the release said.

That comes out to $698 per working child.

Willa Rogers
Mar 11, 2005

“Too often, employers fail to follow the child labor laws that protect young workers,” said Karen Garnett-Civils, the agency’s wage and hour division district director, in a statement. “Under no circumstances should there ever be a 10-year-old child working in a fast-food kitchen around hot grills, ovens and deep fryers.”

Oh, word? Then you might want to do more than fine them on a per-kid amount that's prolly less than your monthly dining-out budget.

I have a kid around that age and this is horrifying.

The US Dept of Labor has a webpage summarizing the number of child labor violations over time and the fines have been laughably small for years:

The number of violations involving minors in hazardous occupations doubled over the past several years.

I meant he could've done something before the feds did, and still can. If anything would be upheld as an executive order, not letting 10 yr olds work at mcd's till 2 am would.

Maybe they are trying to get the invisible hand of the market to pay more for those low interest rate treasuries that are currently bogging down the bank balance sheets. Like the Treasury can’t buy them back right now because of optics. But they can totally pinky promise to buy them back next year, and hopefully prop up the market for the long term treasuries.

At least that is my guess as an outsider looking in. Like the 10 and 20 year bonds at 1% would potentially be more valuable on the market if they US treasury was going to buy them back at face value next year instead of 2030 or 2040. But I could be misreading the whole thing.

they’ll be worth the bond value. if interest rates rise bonds fall in value. but they go back up near maturity, because you get the principle back at maturity.

The opposite also works. a higher interest bond in a falling interest market rises in value but then falls again near/at maturity.

if they are willing to buy immature bonds at face value, then the immature bonds are worth face value, like they would be at maturity.
