This mans got receipts. I think the difference here is that what is being displayed is clearly not what you and that other person are describing as poo poo. I agree that some jokes are lowest common denominator and go on a bit too long but there's just enough in the trailer to say this is not gonna be the Lego Movie. At least I want that to be true. Put the cheap gags to get butts in the seats but pull a Mother-style mindfuck to make people think (and get mad). That's not saying Mother is some deep thing but it was trying something.

Vintersorg posted:This mans got receipts. I don't know that Mother! is a particularly good analogy because that was marketed as a horror film from the get-go (from a director infamous for putting shocking material in his films). Maybe I'm misremembering the marketing campaign for that film. But it's not a subversive work that's playing on any particular tropes, it's simply a straightforward horror film (opinions about it notwithstanding). I can guarantee that if Barbie is going to do anything subversive, it's going to do it in the mildest way possible, to the extent that it can be ignored by people who choose not to see that aspect of it. The arc of the story seems like a pretty cliche loss-of-innocence thing with some nods at how socially regressive the brand has historically been. The movie itself is basically an attempt by Mattel to launder it's new "progressive" brand through a different medium. About the only controversy it's going to court is from chuds like Ben Shapiro or whatever. The reason Toy Story is a relevant comparison is because Toy Story doesn't have a cynical or ironic bone in its body, and plays it completely earnestly, which is something filmmakers seem very allergic to these days (i.e. risking seeming "cringe"). I hope I'm wrong, but that's my take. edit: I should also say I'm generally a wet blanket when it comes to most modern American comedies, and I've never really cared for Margot Robbie (not for any particular reason), so I'm maybe not the best judge of this. Instead it ended up being full on climate fiction and what reads like a gnostic repudiation of the worst traits of the human species but dolled up in pitch black comedy of errors. At my old job we'd send transcriptions out to a little shop run and staffed by Vernon Wells (Road Warrior, Commando) and his wife. I have no idea if they're still in that business considering how little the studios want to pay for things like that anymore.

I was wondering if the old lady on the park bench was a cameo by Barbara Handler (the daughter of the Barbie creator and the person the doll was named after, the 'real' Barbie) but after googling around it seems not. But they did show her an early cut of the film and she approved of it.

I can see the climate change stuff, but the Gnosticism angle eludes me (sorry if this isn’t the right thread to get into gnostic readings of 10 year old horror films) A lot of people focused on the readily apparent christian symbolism at the time as if it was a central aha! moment that the film had parable built in, but all that stuff goes by in a flash imo and is tangentially related (though pops up again near the end for an extremely literal depiction of spiritual cannibalism, the sacrifice of the young which in a climate fiction sense has its own significance). The epochs that the viewer is taken through dilate quite a bit as the movie comes to a close, speed up and go by quicker and quicker until the annihilation and the yielding of mother's love, and then a cyclical material rebirth always in the same template but always flawed. mother's a mesh of different archetypes but a big one is Sophia, the 'world-soul' in her dwelling place and creator of all living that subsequently descends into chaos... while 'Him' (Bardem) can fit into the clothes of demiurge, the craftsman/artisan or 'fashioner' of the physical universe...distinct from The Creator depending on which context is being discussed. This symbolism is cheeky in itself when used in such a cavalier way through black comedy and anxiety inducing camera work, but read as climate fiction it takes on a loving savage tone of condemnation which even if the audiences can't quite articulate they absolutely do feel. It was released shortly after Trump took office, a year and change before COVID, and at the time mother! felt to me like a clarion call in the face of climate doomerism, but first you have to get people to snap out of their normal and one way you can do that is by provoking anger. But also, in a way you have to trick people, too, which is pretty much what Aronofsky did here, just as with Noah. Anyways, aside from all that it's also just a cool example of a studio being tricked into funding and widely distributing something with the edges not yet sanded off, which was more common in the 70s (the movie does indeed nod to horror of that decade) but increasingly rare today.

Sometimes my feeling is just that they're thematically similar (like The Beach Bum is an impossibly dark satire about our current civilization's breakdown dressed as a carefree buddy romp), but often enough the cinematography is key, like the sort of rhythmic descents into madness that happen in Climax or Waves at various intervals, or the distracting too-much-at-once editing style and noise assault of Uncut Gems and EEAAO. Sometimes it's just my feeling about how chamber drama tension is constructed and employed in a film, or how a character's facial expressions are charted endlessly in close-ups as psychological stress is continually ratcheted, or if a film just goes off the deep end in the last 20 minutes like Men. Beau is Afraid spends its first hour flirting with the structure of mother!'s last hour, just an endless comedy of errors and series of progressing anxieties building up in humor and horror, though I don't think it has the stones to actually pull an elegant film out of the mix and instead just gets lost in the exercise.
