My takeaway from that article is that you can save big by getting your stingers in bulk at Costco.

Seems a but disingenuous to not discuss the multiple upgrades the missile has had that could increase the cost. It's not just upgrades, it's also a different industrial base. The US stopped manufacturing Stingers in 2003 so now we need to redevelop the industrial base needed. But yes also the consolidation of the defense industry after the end of the Cold War has been a huge problem.

And every time this comes up in regular conversation, all I hear are workers talking about how nobody (else) wants to work and that the solution in America is to just work harder and earn it. Then you point out how wages consistently fail to keep pace with worker productivity and usually what I get are questions about the source rather than what the numbers say. We have a lot of turnover at my current job and, of course, none of it is ever the fault of the company, the way they treat workers or any of the bullshit they routinely pull. Nope, just lazy workers from top to bottom apparently. At a certain point, doesn't it become obvious when this regularly happens that the problem is the JOB itself? Kind of along the lines where if you think everyone in a room is an rear end in a top hat, then you're the rear end in a top hat? Unless for some reason you're at CPAC or the RNC I mean.

Care about higher wages? Too lazy. Care about better work/life balance? WAY too loving lazy! Universal healthcare or some kind of healthcare reform? They worked loving hard to get a job with healthcare! The people that most consistently agree about this stuff seem to mostly have graduate degrees and already have high paying jobs, good work/life balance, and good healthcare options. Anecdotally from talking to people here in Seattle anyway.

A ton of people base their entire self worth on who they're better than. For a lot of struggling working class folks that means comparing themselves to minimum wage slaves with no benefits. They personally have a horrible life and a rising tide at the bottom end of labour would absolutely lift them as well, but it would narrow the gap between them and the bottom which upsets them more. There's a shocking number of people who rather earn 40k a year when the average is 30k rather than make 50k year when the average is also 50k. It's not the direct personal material benefits, its their place in the social/economic hierarchy.

It’s FYGM in full effect. These people have been trained by the far right to believe that if someone of “lower social stature” gets something, it HAS to mean something is being taken away from you. So they consistently protest increases in Medicaid benefits, minimum wage, medical benefits, etc because it means they’re losing something. They usually perceive that as “social standing”, as if the people “below them” gets raised up, it ACTUALLY means they are being “brought down” They refuse to understand the concept of “if minimum wage/Medicaid benefits get better, it doesn’t lower my value, it means that I too should be seeking more value for what I do/provide”. See, that's the weird thing about it to me. It could just be the circles I run in, the nature of my job and not being employed in a high income bracket, but I hear this "everyone is lazy" and "work harder" poo poo from low income types who live paycheck to paycheck. They think they can't get a raise because of the welfare state and are often the types of people who think they'll lose money if they get a raise due to a higher tax bracket. Like, for me, it's mostly coming from people who could really use some extra time off, better healthcare coverage and who mostly have a Bachelor's degree at best. They hate their jobs but are convinced that working themselves to death is a badge of honor and not enough people are working hard enough like them. LOTS of lower to middle income types voting red in my neck of the woods and gladly espousing the virtues of 50 hour work weeks, even if they hate every moment of it. EDIT: And all this is completely ignoring the fact that any policy that might actually make their lives easier has the SOCIALISM boogeyman label attached to it. Even though they have no problem with our socialist military, police department and fire department. BiggerBoat fucked around with this message at 22:40 on May 24, 2023 |

3D Megadoodoo posted:Seriouspost: is.that not just "inflation"? In modern economics, inflation is traditionally thought to be propelled by workers asking for higher wages, which drives a process economists call the wage-price spiral in which workers asking for higher wages forces companies to increase prices, which leads to workers asking for higher wages, and so on. "Greedflation" is a new term used by orthodox economists to describe inflation that's instead driven primarily by corporate profiteering in a process they called the profit-price spiral: corporations see that consumers expect prices to go up, so they raise prices accordingly, etc. I listen to a lot of mainstream economics podcasts and it's been at turns fascinating, hilarious, and deeply depressing to see how the whole inflation narrative has developed coming out of the pandemic. The line for ages was that supply chain disruption was the instigating factor but that the wage-price spiral was driving everything. But rigorous academic research has in recent months demonstrated clearly that corporate profiteering has been one of if not the main driver of sustained inflation since 2020. And yet, mainstream economists still bend over backwards to defend corporations by explaining that this is the result of businesses anticipating higher costs because of inflation, rather than, you know, exploiting the situation for the short-term profits that capitalism incentivizes. Basically, economics as a discipline treats corporate profit seeking as an organic force of nature that can only be described neutrally, whereas workers seeking higher wages is unnatural; in orthodox capitalist economics, nothing can be done about the former, whereas a lot can--and should--be done about the latter.

yeah I think the question was pointing out that this is what inflation always was, just not on the scale of six shipping companies forming a cartel and raising prices eighteen times
