It's really funny that people have apparently accepted the idea that tropical fruits are strictly gated behind capitalism. This is a stale artifact of the particular historical circumstances of the USSR and the Cold War rather than a universal truth.

The amount of "treats" we'd have to scale back on or how much work would be expected from people who are currently used to spending half an hour or so of emails then dicking around on their phone all day is probably a whole lot different then what is imagined.

I feel like if you're going to do socialism in the America it's extremely important that you do like, cooking training for basically everyone. I would guess that like 80-90% of people in the US have no idea how to cook food for themselves and wouldn't be able to deal with a reduced amount of goods available. They used to have home ec but that poo poo isn't real anymore

Peter Brown wrote an entire book about how "Greed is a Sin" caused something akin to a revolution in social relations in the Roman Empire, and while the huge influx of wealth caused by the Roman nobility converting changed Christianity too, you can in fact cause even the richest people in society to think greed is bad and to spend incalculable fortunes building monasteries and caring for the poor and widows. e: If the problem is "greed is human nature" the answer is simple - appeal to a cause and ideal greater than human nature, socialism or spirituality.

Shear Modulus posted:that's why they came up with effective altruism: to provide a framework for why greed is actually moral and humanist no no it’s actually good to funnel the wealth upward and then maybe distribute like 10% of the promised amounts to communities that need it. you can’t just give money directly to the poors (please ignore all the studies showing giving money directly to people who need it is a loving slam dunk on every metric except ‘number go up’)
