The costume and makeup updates to DS9 season 7 are pretty stark. Odo looks loving weird, like there's an extra layer of putty on his face. Rom's headskirt had a ton of flair and was practically enveloping his ears.

And Dax is barely recognizable.

I approve of Kira's haircut though.

The Bonding is alright by me. Feels like another thematic follow on from Survivors, the alien species of the week offering the young lad Jeremy (ROBOCOP 2 KID) his own little fantasy world where he can live with his recently dearly departed mum. Very low key, but thoughtful, engaging and all the Wesley stuff is good, especially the scene with Beverly. The moment where he confesses that he can barely remember his dad's face, while she, holding back tears, tells him she sometimes remembers all too well, LOVELY. Likewise, the scene of Data and Riker where they're discussing crew deaths, Tasha's in particular. It's emotional, but never really tips the line into wailing melodrama. A hushed, mournful little ep.

I like this episode, Wil Wheaton gets some good stuff to work with here. It's pretty realistic how Wesley gets volunteered to talk to the kid and initially doesn't want to get involved because it means dragging up painful memories of his dad.

It is very interesting how a running back to back theme of Survivors/Watchers/Bonding is grief, people/godlike beings dealing with loss of loved ones and wanting them back in some way. All three of them feel very heartfelt.

The stuff with Wheaton and McFadden is brilliant, because he's struggling and resistant to what he's been asked to do, she's clearly overcome and failing to cover it up with a smile. It's fantastic acting from both of them.

It's not a big spoiler, a later voyager episode mentions that on their ship the holodeck has a totally separate power supply incompatible with the rest of the ship, which is almost certainly because they designed the Voyager class a few years later, and Geordi complained about having his holoddeck power limited by thr ship's power supply in this episode.

Very goony of Starfleet to both have enough porn to need a separate power source for it, and to protect their porn with a redundant power source. Can't have Ensign Redshirt's Klingon BDSM program to go dark in the middle of a pitched battle. Priorities.

I have a soft spot for The Bonding because of my own life, losing a parent early in life. Picard softening and telling Jeremey that he will never be alone and that he has family on the Enterprise to help is an amazing little line for a scared kid. I also like Worf and Troi's conversation at the start of the episode about how frustrating it is that random death took out someone and Worf has no way to direct his anger feels very real.

I just read an article about the audiobook/reprinting of Andrew Robinson's Trek novel. I might pick it up, and I'm in the mindset for some good, light-ish sci fi. I haven't read any Trek novels though, so can the thread recommend some besides "A Stitch in Time?" (Because I'm already going to get that one). Looking for top 5 or 10 lists because I trust the opinion of goons ITT more than randos on the internet, especially about nerd poo poo.

Basically anything Diane Duane wrote, Q-Squared, the Vanguard miniseries, the TOS Mere Anarchy novellas and the DS9 relaunch novels (from "A Stitch in Time" and "Avatar" until it stops keeping your interest, but "The Never-Ending Sacrifice" at the end is quite good, as is everything else Una McCormick wrote about Cardassians) are the ones I generally think almost all Trek fans will find more to like than to dislike.

If you want something more consequential, reading the Destiny trilogy, the follow-ups A Singular Destiny and TNG's Losing the Peace, and then the Typhon Pact miniseries will get you a pretty good slice of a big-deal period of time in the novel continuity, without really punishing you much for not reading before it nor making you feel like you need to keep going after it.

As for how hard they are to find, they're old enough now that I doubt you'll have much luck with bookstores. Libraries should have a bunch, especially through interlibrary loan. Secondhand shops and Amazon used, maybe. I suspect most people who read them these days do so via :filez:, but I'd suggest the other options.

I'm so sad that we never got to see Worf and his three completely different brothers together. Imagine Jeremy hanging out with Kurn! Such a missed opportunity.

The other missed opportunity is that we never got someone telling Picard that he's full of poo poo when he insists he's not good with children.

And if it interests anyone, had ENT gotten its fifth season those Rihannsu books would have been used as a basis for the Romulan society that would have been the overall theme. They are pretty much as near to canon as anything can be without being one.

More Geordie focus in The Enemy. This time he's not acting like a saddo, he's resourcefully surviving on a (pretty excellently realised) miserable, stormy planet where of course he can't just be beamed up for... Reasons. I forget. Magnetic polarity or neutron flows or something. Anyway, he's got to get back to the Enterprise with his new Romulan chum in tow. Meanwhile, Picard's up in space, having a stand off with a Romulan commander. Giant shoulderpads and smug gittiness as usual. Elsewhere, Worf won't give blood for a good cause in a plotline that kinda fizzles. But regardless, good stuff! Again with the tension, the ticking clock of possible war and survival against the odds. Has to be said, Patrick Stewart is IN THE ZONE by season 3. His stiff, clear discomfort is gone, he's playing authoritative, wise, a canny diplomat, all so well.

Funny how everybody is speaking of glittery pillows, since here's the first stumbling block of the season, The Price. A dire Troi romance story that has heavy heavy Mills & Boon paperback artwork vibes. She and faintly creepy, personal space invading Sexy Bad Boy fella having a pretty sudden whirlwind relationship that boils down to lots of breathy snogging and hair fondling and foot rubbing and it's about as a romantic as a colonoscopy. Then there's the whole mirror room lycra workout sesh with Beverly, Jeeeeesus it makes total sense that this is THAT episode. There's a wormhole, scene after scene of boring bargaining for the wormhole, the Ferengi continue to loving suck, I was pretty zoned out. If there's any bright spot, it's Troi's hard brush off for Sexy Bad Boy (I'm not learning his name) at the end when he pulls the "I know I'm a Sexy Bad Boy, but you could be my conscience!" bullshit. That said, it's far too much of a slog to get to that point. Toss it in the bin.

Oh well, seven episodes of pretty uniform quality before I hit a duffer, hope the next one gets it together.

Easy answer: Thinner props are easier to make and look more right for fitting into sparse ship quarters.

I think maybe there might be the idea that maybe future technology will figure out a way to make fabrics comfy with just thinner material. The same kind of technology that you could imagine facilitating Roddenberry's early TNG idea of skintight form-fitting outfits that somehow aren't a total pain in the rear end.

NuTrek, but Voyager related. Prodigy S2 spoilers from the sneak peak at season 2 that just came out, although the show is still cancelled and season 2 is still complete but won't air unless the producers can figure something out. Here's the full clip.

USS Voyager-A. Lamarr class special science vessel, named for Hedy Lamarr. Cutting edge design containing all the shiny new tech Voyager brought back from the Delta Quadrant. 29 decks and 800 crew, so basically very nearly a pure science Sovereign.

To be commanded by Admiral Janeway on the mission to penetrate the Solum temporal wormhole and rescue Captain Chakotay. Also, another familiar crewmember is coming along:

Prodigy just being a sneaky way to do a Voyager seasons 8 and 9 is getting pretty transparent at this point.
