I feel like one of those things your average american doesn't really get is that they associate China with cheap goods because most american companies that outsource work to chinese factories are intentionally paying the bare minimum for a barely functioning product. Modern knicknacks or tools don't suck because they're made in china they suck because they're made cheaply by the lowest bidder, and they're made cheaply because that's what the outsourcers want. It's not like china doesn't have the capacity to make good luxury goods or high precision/quality components that's simply not what's bought and sold here.

they didn't for a long time tho it wasn't like you could import a chinese luxury brand in 1990, and japan did the competitive high end electronics. What you're saying is only recently true, not just a facet of american companies saving a buck

was actually talking to parents and some guy whose been doing kids summer camp and summer games for like 35 years. apparently kids only have 8 weeks of summer these days versus 12?

that's loving sad.

Most schools are slowly creeping toward year round school and I wish they’d just rip the bandaid off already. Americans tend to have a knee jerk response to the idea of going to school in summer (mostly because of tradition and sentimentality) and they don’t even want to hear about all the extra breaks throughout the year that make up for it, so the schools are going for a frog boil approach to slowly get everyone on board.

School didn’t start until after Labor Day from K-8 for me. For high school it was the 4th week in August and I thought it was total bullshit.

the importance of Mars for rich people will be that all of the mid-tier rich people who don't really get to control the blood orgies or world governments will use their fortunes to go setup their own knock-off money dictatorship

most politicians that have spent their entire lives stealing from the public and taking bribes to establish dynasties probably aren't going to be interested in that kind of thing but you'll get plenty of the 30-50billion billionaires that are outshined by Musk, Bezos, Gates and Zuck.

Theres no point to being on Mars or owning a piece of Mars. There is no one there to exploit and little in the way of resources.

It's like Antarctica but 100 times more hostile and six months away by deadly space travel, also a lot less water.

I still have a tub of this stuff from when the pandemic was first starting and no one knew what the gently caress was gonna happen or for how long, so I filled a big plastic bin with emergency food stuff - dry beans and rice, ramen, spam, various seasonings, evaporated and condensed milk, some canned veg to supplement our big garden, and a large tub of Folgers and a thing of Coffeemate in case coffee stuff became unattainable.

My wife and I have slowly been working through the coffee since 2020 (the rest of the bin is almost entirely empty now, I should probably refill it for general emergency prep) as we only use it for a few days at a time when we forget to pick up another refill of coffee worth drinking and can't get to the store, and yeah, this stuff is really not great. Don't get me wrong, it's better than no coffee at all imo, but only just.

However, I did once make it in my pour over Chemex I got as a wedding gift, and you know what? Much improved! Idk why, but it actually made a pretty enjoyable cup of coffee that way. I think the Chemex helps to prevent that acrid acidity that I tend to find in Folgers if I make it in the percolator.

At the end of the day, the alternate is a system that runs on cafeteria food, can be sourced literally anywhere on Earth and is paid locally, and in practice is likely going to be hard to beat on those merits alone.

It's honestly probably better for the material conditions of the masses to move to a Year-Round-School schedule so... yeah they should just do it. rip it off. no more than 2-week summer break

long rear end 3-month summer breaks was for the 60s-90s when parents had someone SAH and could take roadtrip vacations across the southwest for 4 weeks straight. not the 2020s.

that said for sentimentality nostalgia, i do like the idea of them having a big Summer Fun Break but it's just not viable for material conditions these days, so yeah, get rid of it
