the waiting list for ADHD assessment on the NHS is measured in years now, and so naturally people go for private assessment hoping to present their script as a fait accompli. i think psychiatry U.K. are one of the less dodgy ones and have nhs contracts mind. I’ve seen some truly stupid prescribing of amphetamines by some of the less reputable ones

mental health services are chronically underfunded both inpatients and community, wards are always stacked beyond capacity and surprisingly it’s proving difficult to recruit nurses to try to manage extreme self harm while getting the poo poo kicked out of them every day for crap money

Yeah Psychiatry UK is the main one the NHS uses. My GP said my autism assessment would take about 9 months for them to be in touch but they got back to me within 3/4 months. Gonna be longer for ADHD though as I think that's the main thing people are seeking a diagnosis for at the moment? (I am not) I've heard 4-5 years for some people round here.

Friend went private and got his ADHD diagnosis pretty swiftly and put on some meds, not sure what ones but imo he seemed very unwell on them. He said he felt great though so idk. I think he stopped taking them after a few months

Oh poo poo idk why but I didn't think your diagnosis was through Psychiatry UK. I thought it was another private one.
Now I'm gonna be sceptical as gently caress if they do give me a positive autism diagnosis aaaaaaaaaaaaa

I never thought I could have autism but some clinical psychiatrist who was assessing me for a personality disorder said it's probably autism instead and so I should go check that out. I'm very conflicted about the whole thing lol.

Well the thing about adult autism diags is like, they mean very little, concretely. Like you can maybe get some accommodations from your workplace and that's about it. It's not like ADHD where getting access to the right medication is absolutely life-changing.
Like sure I know my fiancee wants hers as confirmation that's it's not her fault or a flaw with her or whatever, and that's absolutely valid, but for me as a boy growing up I was told I was definitely "on the spectrum" for as long as I can remember so when I actually got mine (at an NHS clinic but paid/queued for privately alongside my ADHD one) it was like: okay, so what does this piece of paper do, you know?

Like, what happened to you absolutely sucked of course Jose but the identical thing would have happened except 3 years later if you had gone through normal public NHS.

ADHD is underdiagnosed by like 75% and autism even more than that. You can argue about care and monitoring and so on sure but there is absolutely not a crisis in diagnosing no matter what that one show said about it.

Yeah I get that. I think it's just frustrating because with autism I can't just "fix" it, like with a personality disorder or something you can overcome it with the appropriate medications and therapy but autism is there forever and I guess I'm kind of scared that I have to live with the poo poo like meltdowns for the rest of my life. I had always hoped I could make them go away if I knew the root cause but yeah. On the other hand, having a positive diagnosis would mean accepting them and actually being able to seek out the appropriate resources to handle them better AND maybe I can get some understanding on what the gently caress has been going on for the past 30+ years of my life. It'll be nice to just have clarity. I don't know. It's all just very new to me and kinda scary. Sorry|! Turning this thread into the Solefald show :D

That's absolutely valid and I'm not saying people shouldn't get them or anything if that's what they want. Fwiw yeah there are for example therapists who specialise in peoples with autisms but if you start talking to one they'd very likely take you with or without a formal diag tbh. I hope it helps. Yeah having a bad brain with no "cure" in sight sucks, believe me I am extremely familiar.

And what else is this thread going to discuss tbh, it's nearly a week until Boris's next article.

Biker, Biker, Biker GROOVE!
An NHS psychiatrist was happy to diagnose an (adult) relative of mine first with autism, then ADHD, finally settling on dyslexia. At any point she could have got the good drugs but eventually got prescribed a bigger monitor and some transcription software. She had to be really stubborn to get a diagnosis she could move forward with.

Of course everyone wants an ADHD diagnosis, it gets you learning drugs and modern society can't stop yammering on about how poo poo you are if you aren't constantly succeeding.

Why would being dyslexic mean she doesn't also have autism and or ADHD and wouldn't benefit from ADHD meds also? I don't see how the two are related to each other.

And I really strongly disagree with the idea that people with ADHD only need it to succeed at school/work. It affects your whole life. Every part. Every single thing you try to do. I have been living in my new home 6 loving months and haven't even got around to hiring a cleaner yet. At any point in time I have like 10 phone calls I need to make, nothing to do with work or school just sorting my own life out. It's really really distressing to experience.

having an autism diagnosis can be super helpful to some people even without medical or workplace support but on the other hand it can make medical and workplace issues worse

at least adhd can hypothetically get you medical support (if you can get one) (lol)

but it's all a Land of Contrasts and I know people who really regret having an official autism diagnosis because it's been abused by wankers in positions of power. when I told my gp I was trans she was helpful and supportive... because I'd had a gic referral years ago that lasted a couple of appointments before losing my ability to get out of bed and go to work or do anything at all reliably. "well you're autistic and probably have adhd but you're not a teenager and you've probably known for long enough" thanks, really, very comforting that if I couldn't point to that you'd have Concerns about giving me a blood test or two a year.

still she's the one who agreed that the medication I was asking about before might help with adhd symptoms and, when she couldn't prescribe it, told me I could probably figure out how to get it. thanks!

Yeah all I got from an Austrian Autism diagnosis was “Yeah that explains a lot” and a referral for some place. I should have gone ADHD.

Relating to current political events and decriminalisation of drugs especially those where you can microdose them to improve mental health would go a long way.

obviously sir Keith loving sucks for not scrapping tuition fees but the idea that they’re the biggest strain on students is daft. you literally don’t need to think about them until you’re in your graduate role. that said I’m extremely doubtful the oval office’s going be implementing maintenance grants or heavily subsidised/free accommodation at any point to help with the actual biggest financial burden to students.

The biggest victims of tuition fees are people who fail to graduate, honestly, but it's so easy to blame on personal responsibility that nobody cares.

I think the main point around students not looking to go to university is that assistance you get through the loan system is based on household income and with the cost of everything going up people won’t be able to contribute as much as they could.
