How bearable is the translation? I played Moon Dwellers twice through so I've got a fairly high tolerance for such things.

Their games definitely lack the complexity of other Wizardry-likes but I find their gameplay loop just flat out hypnotic. Like I enjoyed Operation Abyss and that’s bog standard as far as (formerly Vita) DRPGs go. After Mon-yu I just have Babel, Stranger of Sword City, and that game they package with Stranger of Sword City on Steam/Switch whose name I forget

The only Steam-exclusive DRPG I’ve fully played through and enjoyed is an unabashed Etrian knockoff called Infinite Adventures which has wonky character art but mimics Etrian and its systems pretty well. I’ve got Starcrawlers but I just haven’t been able to get into it.

It's significantly better than Moon Dwellers', except maybe in the depths of the Network.

Yes, I realize that is a very low bar.

Disgaea 2 was a game that grew on me the more I played it, as I began to respect the greatly expanded secondary and post game content compared to the first game while still retaining interesting mechanics that kept a degree of strategic gameplay. The PS3 era of the franchise skewed heavily towards rocket tag style combat with most of the tactical challenges revolving around really irritating geo block puzzles.

I think Disgaea 3 is the funniest game in the franchise in terms of writing (I realize this is highly subjective) and I enjoy that it has a relatively breezy pace compared to other games in the series, but it does have to contend with the fact that 4 is pretty much just a straight upgrade in almost every regard. I think the only thing people feel 3 did better is that it is way less irritating getting into the Land of Carnage in 3 compared to 4.

i only played the first disgaea for an hour before i realized the series as a whole would not be for me

actually I haven't really gotten into any of NISA's SRPGs. the SRPG i enjoyed the most from that era was probably Jeanne D'Arc on PSP, the one Level 5 RPG that doesn't peter out in the second half

7's their first 3D game after 6 and it has a majority of the old classes and monsters included in it so it's tangibly better in that sense, even putting aside the damage and level scaling is normal again.

5 was good gamefeel, strong mechanics for postgame, boring story with nothing characters. so if you're largely in these games for the writing I can see why it would not be compelling.

The translated dialogue is what you get when you directly translate Japanese to English, readable but very awkward sounding. Like a fan sub?

The broken Engrish you will find is most likely directly from the original Japanese release so its complete nonsense. Nothing plot critical tho because its not meant to be readable.

But nevermind that, here's Yuzo Koshiro's opinion.

I love Yuzu Koshiro's Twitter. I had no idea he was on that game. All I remember is 1) a really creepy premise that is basically a harem romance thing but the main character is a cartoon mascot looking dragon 2) the animation gimmick meaning almost all enemies are palette swaps

When paused you can see why they probably thought they could do animation style graphics on 3d backgrounds and have it work on the PS3 in Time and Eternity but in motion boy does it become it clear that it just does not work at all
