yea, legit the best thing lowtax ever did was not sell out. he might have been a piece of poo poo wifebeater and serial liar, but even in the grave i gotta still respect just being so bad at business or so egotistical that he never sold it. then again if he did sell it, he woulda blew all his money immediately and probably OD'd on drugs on the streets in like 2010 instead.

the rumor/lore was that Conde Naste was the one that offered Lowtax like $7(17?) million for somethingawful too. I think Jeff confirmed this at one point but I could be wrong. When he turned that down, Conde Nasty bought up Reddit instead lol. even in his grave, you could say he inadvertently also took down Reddit by letting CN buy them out instead

the impending Reddit IPO is/was supposed to happen this year and it's gunna be such a shitshow, i can't wait :munch:. once reddit dies, all search engines immediately lose 90% of their utility and google stock will crater too. the destruction of reddit is the domino that will hopefully lead to destruction of the internet, inshallah

correct: Cheap oil is the modern equivalent of the divine right of kings to rule.

contemporary lifestyle and economics (and resulting treats or even just life) all derive from cheap oil. The amount of work a human can do in a day is around 600 watt-hr, but then here comes fossil fuels wherein a barrell has the energy potential of 700,000 watt-hours, or equivalent to a person working for 40 hours per week for over 4.5 years that requires no food, no healthcare, nothing, it's the perfect slave force-in-organic form. Each american uses around 60 barrels per year. that's a loving lot of work (in the thermodynamic sense) being done for free* to give us the contemporary life. American life is so intrinsically tied to cheap energy that even small shocks in energy pricing throw the hamburger lifestyle way out of balance. Therefore the number one importance for the state to remain in power (and keep accumulating capital) is to keep the supply of energy as cheap and bountiful as possible to while also being The One to consume as much of it as possible. Energy/oil shocks have toppled countries before and spurred massive unrest, and will continue to do so forever.

that's obviously a poor analogy and extremely reductionist; however, if gas ever goes to over $10/gallon, whoever is in power is getting ousted asap.

that’s right

That's a really good way of putting it! I hadn't thought of it that way before. It also explains why even the tiniest change to the American lifestyle to prevent human extinction is so fiercely resisted. Even things that are arguably improvements like 15 minute cities which are subject to wacky conspiracy theories.

though when energy reaches a point where working class american consumers can't afford it, the american ruling class won't be ousted, they'll just switch to using the energy to oppress and kill workers to stay in power, periphery style.

one thing I would add to Xaris's excellent post is that it has to be specifically fossil fuels, and not any other kind of energy source that we have since discovered and are capable of using, because fossil fuels can be moved around, can be concentrated, can be traded for, and otherwise is a fungible commodity

coal-fired steam engines were chosen over water mills during the Industrial Revolution because you couldn't concentrate wealth with water mills, and you couldn't easily move your water wheels around to wherever laborers are most easily exploitable

you're not going to see a movement to solar or hydro or even nuclear power, for the same reasons

👁 hello mr malm

I think another key element from Fossil Capital was about coordination/cooperation problems, too - a big part of his section on coal vs. water wasn't just that the Stock was mobile and fungible, but that a Flow-based economy requires pretty colossal amounts of central planning and command economy. if you're a member of the Gosplan Mississippi River Hydrological Zone you can probably extract quite a lot of value/power/human standard of living from it, but it requires a lot of central planning and organisation that simply isn't possible under a capitalist system.

You can't get as much power from water mills/flow as from super-concentrated stock, but iirc it's a lot more than you'd expect.
