Notes on Data and Limitations:
  • In this post I provide alternative visualizations for the overall weekly disease activity and reporting on weekly confirmed case positives, emergency department (ED) visits, new hospitalizations, total inpatients/occupied hospital beds, and confirmed deaths. Additionally I provide changes in COVID-19 activity due to backfill.
  • Trends are calculated based on the % change in the totals for the most recent week of data compared to the second most recent. This differs from the state's trend % as they are doing a % change of a % of ED visits and hospitalizations, respectively.
  • Columns with a bright bar are the new additions for this week's report. Darker columns are from previously published weekly reports. An outlined column is where previously established numbers have been reduced with this week's report.
  • These graphs were put together by using a multitude of resources spanning from the Washington State Department of Health all the way to the CDC and HHS. All of these state and federal reports use the standardized Sunday-Saturday 7-day definition.
  • Reinfections are only counted when equal to or greater than 90 days since prior recorded infection unless both samples were sequenced and found to be different subvariants.
  • All numbers except for cases and deaths are a reflection of 'healthcare encounters' and not representative of individuals nor of residence. Totals are extrapolated by applying the state's weekly hospitalizations or ED visit % to the HHS' reporting of hospitalizations and ED visits due to all causes. Beds occupied by COVID-19 is the weekly average multiplied by 7 days, and beds occupied by influenza is from HHS reports.
  • A COVID-19, Influenza, or RSV death is only counted by the state if data is complete (cause of death is attributed to the disease and there is an associated laboratory positive test with no period of complete recovery between illness and death). The only exception is that RSV does not need a test, only that it is indicated as cause on the death certificate.

No antibiotics, nothing like that, just all things to control my sinus and pathway issues.

From my own experience, there has been a pretty long standing conflict between my primary care physician and my pulmonologist about steroids, with the primary care thinking it was a pretty good idea, but the pulmonologist being against it, because it can exasperate issues in non-COPD lungs, although it does take awhile to happen apparently. Now personally I usually felt like I was breathing better while taking it, but the results in the breathing tube don't bare that out so it must just be psychosomatic. What has actual demonstrable effect is rescue inhalers and alleregy meds (except benadryl which I'm not supposed to take unless I get hit up by a bee)

But yeah when your lungs start to go it's really scary and there are so many things it could be, especially if you're younger than 50 because a lot of doctors playbook is for dealing with lung issues in older patients. If you can, try to get in to see a pulmonologist. But even after doing that, It took YEARS for me to get a diagnosis and it ended up coming from some surgeon who I've never met, in the Atlanta Mayo clinic for whom my file finally came across his desk, sent by a heart specialist that the pulmonologist sent me to at a cancer hospital. It may in fact be in fact you got long covid it could be something else entirely but don't give up until you get some sort of treatment that makes breathing easier for you.

Sorry this is about rambly since I've never really formulated thoughts on it all but I think my point is that they will eventually figure out what's wrong, just don't give up on yourself and don't take "eh I dunno" as a response.

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - A significant uptick in Covid cases has one health system telling people to wear masks at its facilities.

Samaritan Health is now requiring masks to be worn in patient care areas as well as public areas in their buildings, including the hospital, cancer treatment center, and senior living care facilities. Other Samaritan facilities will ask you to use a mask if you’re showing symptoms.

It’s because Covid cases at the hospital’s emergency department have jumped 675 percent.

Likely within a single immunocompromised individual (and therefore hyper specialized and apparently non- or very poorly transmissible), but everyone should be aware that COVID continually does these "backups", which become wildly divergent and can potentially kick of a new wave at some future point. It is perhaps what happened with Omicron as well as BA.2.86.

"Private" in this context mean unique to the sample and therefore apparently not inherited from a progenitor.

I saw a headline in the local paper about a football player at the college in town's sudden, unexpected death. Got past the paywall and found my assumption confirmed - cardiac arrest at age 22. Mention of a previously-unknown genetic condition, no mention of covid and the stress it puts on your heart when you immediately exercise after it. To be fair, I have absolutely no way of knowing if he had covid recently, but the fact that it's not hard to find more and more anecdotal evidence of an otherwise healthy young person having their heart give out is just terrifying.

lmao at only 15.7% of adults having gotten the updated shot.

https://www.cnbc.com/2023/11/30/us-covid-shot-rates-are-low-and-it-will-be-a-challenge-to-boost-them.html posted:

Covid vaccine rates in the U.S. are slumping — and it will be a challenge to boost them
  • Covid shot uptake is slumping, and vaccine makers and health experts believe vaccination rates in 2024 and beyond will likely look similar to the uptake of the latest round of shots this year.
  • The bigger uncertainty appears to be whether rates could increase down the line — and what would cause more people to roll up their sleeves.
  • What experts and vaccine makers can agree on is that low vaccination rates put more people at risk of getting severe Covid infections.
Three years into the Covid-19 pandemic, few Americans are rolling up their sleeves to get a Covid vaccine.

Only 15.7% of U.S. adults had received the newest Covid shots from Pfizer, Moderna and Novavax as of Nov. 18, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
(..)
Why are some people not taking Covid vaccines?
Covid shot uptake has dwindled since the first vaccines against the virus rolled out in late 2020, when Americans felt more urgency to protect themselves as cases soared.

This year, roughly half of adults who were previously vaccinated said a lack of worry about Covid is a reason why they haven’t gotten a new vaccine, including a quarter who called it a “major reason,” according to a poll released earlier this month by health policy research organization KFF.

That reasoning reflects multiple factors. First, Covid infections haven’t spiked significantly in the U.S. this year, especially compared to prior years of the pandemic, according to Mokdad [ed. epidemiologist and chief strategy officer for population health at the University of Washington. ].

He added that people have more immunity from previous vaccinations or infections, which protects them from getting severely ill from the virus.
(..)

Can't imagine why they would think that there is nothing to worry about, when people like you tell them they are protected and there haven't been a spike of COVID infections. :iiam:

You gonna eat that?
My pre-teen wants to visit friends and have them come over. She's already in school all day with these kids, and she has lunch in the same room as these kids, but she eats very little and very fast, so her mask can stay up. She masks while interacting indoors at their homes, and if they come here they mask in our house, and we figure it's in line with her present daily exposure.

When she's had a friend over for dinner, they ate on the back deck, and I now have a space heater for the garage for future use. But, after the first kid-dinner-visit, nobody will come over. They always "just don't want to see people right now." I don't know if my kid has picked up on the subtext, but it happens literally every time, with every kid, and I really think that it's because our house frankly sucks to go to - especially in the Midwest, in winter.

Is there any way that she can have friends over for dinner or snacks or bad-day-sympathy ice cream, that is not guaranteed to get us both killed? Because I am both really against it, and also really aware that I'm chipping away at her social life. But "ruining her life" in the teen emotional sense is still better than actually ruining her life with long COVID. But we all know this isn't going away and is going to get worse, and at some point she may want to go on dates, so I'm going to have to cross this bridge anyway....

Clearly I have neuroses in general, and also an unhealthy obsession with CR cubes and air purifiers. I also have a house with an excellent cross-breeze window setup, and an HVAC furnace with 3M 2800 filters. I have a fireplace and space heater next to the sliding door, with room there for a dining table, so I can have the screen door open and not freeze. I'm searching really hard for any options I have that decrease risk.

She also has adult supervision other than me so, if there is a way to do this, and there's research to support it that I can share with the other adults, that would be grand.
