A PCR or LAMP test won't work unless the sample also contains human DNA and admitting you pooled your own sample with a dog's to bypass that issue as a medical professional of any stripe would be problematic

So much of the pandemic response has made me disdainful of western values and mores. It makes perfect sense that the top-down response to "you can stay home for a while rather than work and die" and "you can have a nice time chilling outside with friends without spending money" was "kill it with fire!"

COVID-19 vaccination sites to be closed in Toronto as pandemic funding expires

The City of Toronto will soon be shutting down its four fixed-site COVID-19 vaccination centres as emergency pandemic funding from the province ends.

On Dec. 13, the clinics at Metro Hall, Cloverdale Mall, North York Civic Centre, and the site near the Scarborough Town Centre will permanently close.
(..)
The closures come as wastewater data now shows that the rate of COVID-19 infection in Ontario is at its highest point in more than a year. The Public Health Ontario data also suggests that other indicators are pointing to rapidly rising levels of viral activity as the temperature drops and residents spend more time indoors.

"We asked about comparisons prior to the pandemic. And the waves that they're seeing now, the peak is not as high as what they saw in 2018-2019," Van Kerkhove told health news outlet STAT in an interview on Friday.

Must have been pretty dire in 2018-2019 to an extent where I am not sure it is a reasonable comparison, considering:

Child respiratory sickness overloads China’s paediatric clinics – reports
Authorities appeal for calm, saying spike is due to end of Covid-19 lockdown restrictions

A surge in respiratory illnesses in China, particularly among children, has reportedly swamped paediatric units in city hospitals, while authorities have urged calm, attributing it to a post-lockdown wave of illness.

Many hospital wards are full, according to state and other media reports in China. The Global Times reported on Tuesday that the Beijing Children’s hospital was receiving up to 9,378 patients a day and had been at full capacity during the past two months. It also said outpatient clinics, paediatric clinics, and respiratory departments at several Beijing hospitals were booked out for at least seven days.

I work for a lab that does tests on samples from animal hospitals and there is a test for COVID afaik but it's sent to a specialist so probably takes a day or two. The article said it was urgent so probably not enough time for results? Also, incidentally, once a doctor sent in their own blood to test, that was pretty weird, lol.

Nah, I read the scientific article abstract earlier and didn't post about it, because it isn't really relevant unless you handle seals. It wasn't known prior what caused so-called "seal hands" (sepsis), because the bacteria doesn't incubate well (it grows at 32 C, but stops at 42). It doesn't seem like a good candidate for making the leap to humans.

The timing is amusing though.

Pfizer is sued by Texas over COVID vaccine claims

Pfizer (PFE.N) has been sued by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who on Thursday accused the drugmaker of misrepresenting the efficacy of its widely-used COVID-19 vaccine.

In a complaint filed in a Lubbock County state court, Paxton said it was misleading for Pfizer to claim its vaccine was 95% effective because it offered a "relative risk reduction" for people to who took it.

Paxton said the claim was based on only two months of clinical trial data, and vaccine recipients' "absolute risk reduction" showed that the vaccine was just 0.85% effective.

He also said the pandemic got worse even after people started taking the vaccine, developed by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech (22UAy.DE).

Perhaps you are right, I am not confident enough to push back on this view. My understanding is that small covid reservoirs always existed in China, which is why lockdowns did happen from time to time, as the reservoirs were discovered. But living under capitalism may have just stunted my political imagination. Its hard to even think about an effective, global contact tracing system that most people would have bought into. If the infrastructure existed to vaccinate everyone at once, maybe there was also a tiny eradication window if 8+ billion people would have been jabbed before the emergence of delta. [kanye voice] I guess we'll never know

ah, yeah i agree 100% that outbreaks like the wuhan one are essentially unavoidable, pretty much no matter what, unless we abandon urban living altogether. and if it wasn't sars-cov-2 there, it would have been some other bat virus somewhere else. and probably that will happen in the future (lol). but yeah in some hypothetical world where everything is organized like china was in 2020, it seems reasonable it could have been eradicated. i actually think there's ways to eradicate it that are both better and easier than what china did, but eh. and yeah, i've also wondered what would have happened had we prepped 8 billion doses for a one-day vax event, or like, what if we put everyone eligible on paxlovid for the next two months, etc.

oh well! =)
