A History of Violence is this? I only saw it once when it came out and liked it but forget if it's that.

You're Next, sort of. Not one of those three categories exactly but the same basic plot beat. The protagonist grew up in a survivalist commune.

I watched Jumpin' Jack Flash, I think because it came up during a morning news show reunion of the cast of Taxi. Maybe it's because I was cooking fudge and checking the pot every 10 minutes, and this was literally my first spy movie, so I had more patience than most, but I disagree with the critics and audience who panned it and thought it was a terrific movie.

That sounds like Parker from the Richard Stark books who has a strict rule of no loving, and no sex drive if he didn't have the rule, while he's organizing or performing a heist.

This despite every hot woman in any early Parker book throwing herself at him.

Of course he become a raging gently caress machine once a job is done and spends his time either laying by the pool or boning until he runs out of money and needs to do another heist.

That is until he settles down in like book 8 or 9.

I always loved that about Parker. He'd be ultra professional with no distractions until the heist is finished and he's several hundred thousand dollars richer, then he just hangs out in a nice hotel drinking and loving hot women until the next book.

It's a pretty fun kind of series gimmick, reminds me of how apparently the old Fafrd and Grey Mouser books had them always start every book broke and usually in debt from partying nonstop since the last book.

ed: Also reminds me of Golgo 13, who basically in between meticulously planned assassinations is busy partying and loving, never changing his expression even then.

Honestly I’ve considered making this for the past couple years but always get anxious about it as I’m not exactly a beloved member of this subforum (see: the bizarre amount of animosity Roth has towards me), plus it would be a pain in the rear end tryna figure out the rules with regards to “do you pick movies that have been released in the poster’s country that year or what”. But idk would people be down for it? The Games and TVIV polls are so much fun.

since, as we've already established, this would be specifically for my enjoyment, my suggestions would be similar to the video games one.

Keep the rules simple and bolded at the top of the OP, the games thread is pretty messy this year.

minimum 5 movies, up to 10 will be counted. put as many or as few as you want, but some basic criteria like that to be counted toward the overall top list (if that even needs to be a thing?). also have to write something for each one (doesn't have to be a review necessarily, E/N poo poo is great too)

the other super important thing is that it be a rainbow sparkle fairyland safe-space with no counter-critiques or any form of commentary on other people's lists other than, essentially, "I like that film, or your list, or that theatre that you mentioned you saw it at". encourage and support ludicrous effortposts with pretty custom GIFs

I think the spirit of the thing should be mainly 2023 movies but 2022 movies with later international releases or even DVD/VOD releases in 2023 (we don't have infinite money to see everything in cinema on release date) should be fine. maybe if you're squeaking something in on a technicality you should have to state why you think it counts.

I really don't think it matters who starts it, only a tiny fraction of people who would post their lists would even look at/care about usernames. make it and people will post. it'll be great. someone else do it please

Quick question, at the beginning of Raging Bull, why does the crowd riot and go nuts in that first fight?

edit: the movie kind of explains it a few mins later, saying the judges were lame and the crowd knew it. I'll put my phone down for Marty.

I'm watching a Scorsese a day at the moment, did Goodfellas and Casino so far, good times. Haven't seen a lot of these since I was a teenager.

re: Booksmart

Watched this again. Is Molly supposed to be likeable? She's driven and tries to be a decent friend. That's pretty much it in the positive column. But she's arrogant and at the same time insecure and that doesn't change all that much by the end.

The brown haired girl from Bad Teacher is much more likeable. Yet you can't root for her because she's not on any kind of hero's journey. She starts off affable, conscientious, without regrets, open about her orientation, and doesn't look down on the cool kids. In two words, well adjusted. She's just a little too shy around girls. But she's also 18. Why should the audience care if she finds herself a gf now, versus in a year or two years or three years?

Spy Kids is the obvious example

I don’t know where to post this, but I just watched Mazes and Monsters, the late-70s moral panic movie about Dungeons and Dragons starring teen Tom Hanks. It’s got some lovely ideas about mental illness and was born from the shameless exploitation of a real kid’s suicide, but it’s kind of charming despite itself. The characters are simple but lively, and there’s some good comedy bits between the characters before Tom Hanks goes insane from too much Dungeons and Dragons. Plus I just love seeing on-location footage of New York in that era. All the dorm and library interiors are real places, and it’s neat seeing what those spaces looked like and how people lived. There’s a lot of footage of the interior of the World Trade Center with original carpet and fixtures. I guess I’m not seeing any care put into movie-of-the-week tv trash.

Also I think the movie accidentally invented larping.

Mazes and Monsters is in a bad place because it sounds like some kind of fun Reefer Madness Chick Tract thing but then you watch it and it's just a kina OK TV movie that feels like a very special episode of a sitcom. He doesn't even go crazy from Dungeons and Dragons, he has mental illness and it just gets channeled into being way too into the game. None of the other players are even evil!

I AM GRANDO

It ends up kind of pro Dungeons and Dragons in that the party uses their knowledge of role-playing and comes together to go on a real-life adventure and save Tom Hanks. If they weren’t into that nerd game, they wouldn’t have had the teamwork and creativity necessary to save him.

On that note I could see Rick, while tied up, explaining to some Machiavellian anti-hero citing The Prince that the book was most quite plausibly written as a satire of the new regime in Florence or on the other hand a sycophantic attempt to get back on its good side, but in any case it's quite doubtful it represents what Niccolo actually believed worked or would be ethical were it to work.

But you know, more funny.
