It’s not, it’s already collapsed and for a huge number of people it functionally no longer exists.

The NHS is in a scary state at the moment. A good online disabled friend of mine recently found herself in ICU after a heart attack. On her last day in ICU she was listed, without her consent, request or knowledge, that she was DNR. She only found afterwards when she was able to access her notes about the visit. Every attempt to find out how she was listed like that and who authorised it has been met with brick walls and disconnected phonelines.

She's finding that reversing this status for any potential future trips is proving difficult.

Hmm that is pretty shocking. I would advise her to really push on this via formal complaints etc. Might be worth talking to the press etc. Also you can often get a lot out of a freedom of information request - while they can redact certain things and be very awkward they are legally obligated to provide the material, and as far as I can remember the cost isn't super excessive.

I think the funniest result might be a hung parliament in some configuration, but I'm willing to be proven wrong.

I don't work in acute medicine, but my understanding is that a DNR is a valid thing to add to someone's file if it's felt that the medical intervention to resuscitate someone would result in them having a significantly poorer quality of life if the resuscitation is successful.
That should be discussed with a patient if they're able to have a discussion, or their next-of-kin if not. I don't know what the situation is with your friend, mind.

But we know that some doctors don't bother following the rules and feel that they know best and are entitled to do things in a patient's "best interest" because of their level of knowledge and specialism. We also know that some doctors find it borderline impossible to admit when they've made a mistake.

Whatever the reason the DNR was put on your friend's file, they should be able to find out some details. If PALS isn't working out, maybe see if your friend has a Tory MP who'd kick up a stink for a chance to stick a knife in the NHS.

I live in Lincoln: a swing constituency. Our most recent Labour MP was Karen Lee, who was a staunch SCG member and lost her seat in 2019. This is why the Labour Party are now running Hamish Falconer — Lord Falconer's son. He's a former civil servant who once lead the home office counter terrorism response team.

A hung parliament would be the funniest option because then Keith has to go begging the other parties for support. Ironically a Lab-Lib coalition is the least worst outcome there.

I mean obviously Lab-Green would be better but you know the piss diamonds will see their numbers swell undeservedly this time around, even if the Greens pick up some seats.

A postmistress from Edinburgh falsely accused of stealing £30,000 tragically alone, and penniless in a homeless hostel, her family has said.

Fiona McGowan passed away in 2009 at the age of 47 after she lost her family, her home, and her job.

Her three children, who have bravely come forward to fight for justice, said the Post Office Horizon scandal is to blame for killing their mum and tearing all their lives apart.

AIUI: a DNR does not require consent but discussions is a Must not Should (as long as the patient or next-of-kin is compos mentis). So fuctifino's friend should definitely be able to force a discussion about the situation of a DNR going forward and perhaps win the argument that the DNR is inappropriate, but they can't force the medical profession to perform medical procedure's against it's medical judgement.
https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/do-not-attempt-cardiopulmonary-resuscitation-dnacpr-decisions/

The reality is that we're conditions by shows like ER or Casualty to massively overestimate the effectiveness of resuscitation, and then the long-term prognosis should it actually be successful. Plus the act itself is way more brutal and unpleasant than the television version. Studies show doctors are far more likely to decline intervention than non-doctors.

I get to hear a lot of bad experiences about the NHS from friends, but this recent one sent shivers down my spine. I don't see it as a fault of any individual, but rather the collapsing and broken system.

Yeah my aunt got DNRs against two of my grandparents because at the ages they died it would amount to beating the poo poo out of a sick pensioner just for a coin-flip that they could live a few more weeks, but people thought she was terrible at first until she explained that.

On the converse of that, about 80% of people support assisted dying now, up from about 40% a decade ago. Not that the government is likely to do anything about that (other than charge you with chemical weapons offences if you try).
