I guess it's a difference of opinion on people's inherent motivations? I fully agree that capital intentionally works to focus voters' prejudices in a way to undermine the things that would be good for them, but those prejudices have to be there in the first place to exploit. It's a generally hateful culture a lot of people live in that creates the openings for that sort of politics. To bring it back to the original post, it's hard to say that Americans "deserve" better when we (as a group) are so easily exploitable around personal prejudices by said self centered interests.
