Alright to close out the 64th day, I will elicit goons for advice on how I should unshittify my current hookup for the 64-bit console, because I feel like I'll just be in analysis paralysis of this forever otherwise. Currently I'm just rawdogging a composite feed from my NS1 console straight into the AV breakout of my HDTV, this is far from ideal for hopefully obvious reasons.

As I see it, there are basically two reasonable avenues of getting a better video signal out of an N64 into an HDTV:
- Keeping the console unmodded and getting an s-video cable and upscaling it using an upscaler like a retrotink 2x mini (sold out forever), 2x pro or 5x pro (a bit pricey for the specific job), or a bitfunx retroscaler 2x (supporting knockoffs)
Or
- Modding the console to amp the RGB signal (requires some soldering skill and dedication which I'm hesitant about, but my console being NS1 should make it easier) and then getting either component cables or a SCART cable and plugging that into a retrotink pro thing (pricey), or just getting a rad2x which simplifies that hook up process (for relatively cheap)

The unreasonable option (to me) is modding the console to output HDMI natively, which is a lot more effort and cost than I want to bother with, and worry that it would just expose the flaws of N64 graphics too much.

So what has been the experience of others for getting their N64 hooked up to an HDTV with a decent video signal? And what would be the best/easiest bet given what's currently available on the market?

Easiest is the Retrotink, I got one some months ago and it’s been excellent. Largely because of the CRT filters and HDR injection that somehow manage to be actually good unlike every other version of those things ever. If you have more than one old console I’d say it’s totally worth the 5X even for its price.

I really love the concept of the mystery dungeon games and have played most of them, but they seem to be either too hardcore like the Shiren games or too easy like the Pokemon mystery dungeon games. I feel like Chocobo's Dungeon on the Wii was a nice middle ground. I don't know which way Nightmare of Druaga leans but only became aware it existed a few months ago when I saw someone streaming it and thought it looked great.

I had an N64 with the N64Digital installed and it was by far the most disappointed I've been with an HDMI mod. I think the N64 just belongs on a CRT. Even with the filters and scanlines it didn't look right to me on my setup. I don't own an RT5x though for comparison, but I would second that's probably the best option.

I bought one of those RGB mod boards that you solder to the AV port and it was one of the most painless mods I've ever done. It really helps that all the connection points for the RGB signals are just existing holes in the N64 board you poke the wires through.

I currently use a simple-modded N64 with HD Retrovision cables into a Retroscaler2x. In the past I've used composite and component hooked directly up to an HDTV.

The mod on an NS1 is pretty easy. I was able to do it years ago with not much soldering experience. It's actually a good gateway mod if you're interested in learning.

With that said... imo the juice isn't worth the squeeze when it comes to N64. Going from composite to s-video is a nice step up, but going from s-video to RGB isn't exactly mind blowing. Some of the de-blur options out there are interesting but I haven't been able to try that. So I guess I'd say if you have other consoles that you would potentially use with an upscaler, then go that route and just use s-video. If you're ONLY going to use N64, it might make more sense to mod it and use a rad2x cable (or component directly into tv).

I'll also throw my vote in for s-video into a Retrotink for the N64. It's a nice boost. The 2X is more than sufficient for the N64, I haven't noticed a huge improvement on the 5X for it. It's not like the Saturn or PS2, where the 5X's better deinterlacing is noticeable.

I was going to record some example footage of my N64 into my Retrotink but apparently my composite cable has poo poo itself and won't put any video signal out, not even into my TV's composite input directly. So that's another cable I need to buy.

I prefer my N64 on CRT. If I want it on an HD display, I think the N64 core on mister is the best option because you can turn a bunch of features on and off to make it look better because they only look decent on a CRT.

I have my N64 hooked up to a modern LCD TV that so happens to have composite input for some reason. It's a 4K TV and I have no idea what res it's upscaling the image to, but it has minimal to no latency. It's good enough to allow me to get the true ending in Mischief Makers which is fine by me.

It looks pretty good for what it is. It's fairly soft and muddy, but sharp enough to read fine text and whatnot. My only complaint is that can get really dark. Doom 64 is literally unplayable even with the brightness (both TV and game settings) cranked all the way up. I could only do night tasks in OoT at dusk.

The breakout box is the only one I’ve seen that actually has an optical port for 5.1, highly recommended because it is actual in game 5.1 and not just the PS2’s “you might get 5.1 in a cutscene for the 6 or 7 games where the developers bothered”

This is correct. The OG XBOX's Nvidia chipset was a derivative of the Nforce motherboard chipset and it retained the hardware real time Dolby Digital 5.1 encoder. Games could have actual real directional surround sound, and the HD breakout box was the only way to get that via an TOSLINK connection.

I am not aware of any PS2 game that could do it real time DD encoding like that. As far as I know, it was a hardware only feature at the time. Correct me if I am wrong about that.

I like to imagine Midway developed it in a dark cave and never bothered testing it in any other conditions.

I noticed this playing WinBack yesterday. I was playing a stage with some dark hallways and especially the enemies wearing all black would just end up being invisible. But the game has auto-aim so it wasn't a big deal.

I assume doing the RGB amp mod would help in those low gamma situations?

Wrong. It's brilliant :colbert:

Could be rose tinted glasses but it's still my favorite of all the original run of official campaigns. Doom 1 and Plutonia are pretty close, depending on which parts, but I never found Doom 2's levels very enjoyable at all except for a select few.

I beat pilotwings on the snes tonight, and I was having such trouble landing the light plane on the last lesson that I wanted to see a video afterwards of someone getting a perfect score. But I can't find anything on youtube, and it seems like maybe it's impossible because the closest I found was a TAS of perfect score attempts that doesn't really even try on the last light plane level. The difficulty in getting a perfect score on that level is that there's wind pushing the plane sideways and to get a perfect score you need to land perfectly in the middle of the runway with a straight angle. The wind pushing you sideways makes it so that you need to be approaching the runway with your plane tilted against the wind, so getting the correct angle and staying in the middle of the runway is practically impossible.

Well suruga-ya is giving me a refund for my two broken sakura PS2 controllers which I appreciate. I had to take pictures of everything and I also made a youtube video showing them the controllers were defective with some controller testing software I found on my FMCB card. If they were cheap controllers I wouldn't have bothered, but I paid $60 for one of them so I was definitely expecting it to work.

Also my third order shipped... got something included that I didn't know if it would make it through or not :stare: I'll post some pics if it arrives. Probably my last shipment. Suruga-ya made me realize I've got a controller addiction that I've never really acted upon until now. Also the one item on my wishlist that would tempt another order seems to have been bought. Was a complete in box SFC King of Dragons for like $60bux...that game is stupid expensive for the US version.
