Duo was always super popular in the west due to the combination of being the cool friendly wisecracking one while piloting the black scythe-wielding assassin gundam called the DEATHSCYTHE while calling himself the grim reaper. He's like the platonic ideal of what a 90s/early 00s 13 year old would want to be if they were a gundam pilot.

In wings second episode duo shoots heero in the arm to prevent him from shooting Relena. Relena gets pissed at duo for shooting heero and goes to bandage his wound. Duo rightfully wonders how he ended up being seen as the bad guy in this situation. He's legit the only sane gundam pilot.

So, slowly watching through Victory Gundam, and there's something structurally interesting about it. So far, up to episode 9, it feels much more serialized than '79, Zeta, ZZ, or even later shows like G or Iron Blooded Orphans. The plot advances every episode, and they don't tend to stand on their own, so if you miss a week, you have to go back. At the same time, it feels like the plot advances less than most other shows. It's not huge changes of location, we don't have important feeling villains drop off regularly, there's not a real change in level of resources (always more boots), the League having a ton of people get killed (including their leader) hasn't really changed much in terms of how they operate... it's weird. Really feels weirder with how the show was meant to aim younger. Generally, shows for kids are all about the one-shot episodes, after all.
