Pittsburgh Fentanyl Cloud posted:You are not allowed to just enjoy things anymore, all things must be monetized. The major sports leagues did not locate a franchise in Vegas for decades because they didn't want to present the appearance of impropriety, and it took less than a decade to knock all that poo poo down. It’s loving crazymaking. For years, there were books sneering at sports in Asia, saying that cricket and football could never have the quality of play found on the west (white Dominions) because sports gambling corrupted the sports. Players, referees and leagues were all dismissed as crooked and any results or impressive play was attributed to fixing and “East Asian cultural attitudes towards gambling”.

Since it deserves more than just a shitpost: https://sports.yahoo.com/hit-three-monster-bets-then-153339808.html quote:There’s a common marketing slogan in sports betting: “Sweat the game, not the payout.” In other words, when dealing with legitimate sportsbooks and not some shady neighborhood bookie, gamblers shouldn’t have to worry about getting stiffed. it's such a good loving scam I want to form a LLC and take bets and tell all the winners "sorry it was an obvious error" just to see how far I can get. It's a hilariously transparent scam too: you post either a sure win or a crazy good odds, take everyone's money and then refuse to pay. If they lose of course it wasn't an "obvious mistake" and you keep it. quote:Some protection is only fair, Beyers said: If a customer tries to cash in on a blatant fat finger, “you’re basically stealing money from someone who made a mistake.” quote:The house has a bigger edge on parlays, in some cases collecting roughly $20 for every $100 wagered, compared with about $5 for every $100 in conventional “straight” bets. But generating accurate, real-time odds for thousands of hypothetical combinations every second of every day is “essentially impossible,” we want to make these insanely profitable parlays as fast as possible and we don't want to ever lose, don't make us pay out when it blows up in our face! (E: to be clear he's arguing against them being able to back out of bets when they realize they hosed up in their rush)

I am finally glad my parents watched the most boring sports on the planet when I was a child (or at least the most boring sports to my young self). Tennis and Golf. Tennis I had no clue about the finer points, so it was all one or two hits and then done. And golf was just many hours of quiet whispering over green fields. I have no real desire to watch sports, so I don’t feel any great loss of avoiding sports now that it has degenerated into straight up horse racing with people. I still find it hilarious when I read you can bet on professional wrestling. Like how is that not able to be fixed from both sides of the equation?

And what happens when the “script” for Monday Night Raw, or whatever the hell it is gets leaked? Or just insider traded? Like can some PA make bank by always knowing which thing to bet on, or is this a case of the App always denying all payouts related to wrestling. Because to win means you must have insider knowledge. Or never having touched the ap (and way over thinking things), is it nothing but dumb prop bets that are not truly scripted. Over/ under for number of punches, slams, etc?

Beached Whale posted:We're going to leave so many people with crippling gambling addictions once this is all said and done. Half the screen is going to be stupid prop bets with insane odds that trigger the 10% of people predisposed to compulsive betting to throw money away into the skinner box until they're out homeless on the streets. I'm sure they've got services on the backend analyzing which bets are the most profitable and presenting them to users so they continue to lose money. I know other people in this thread have talked about legalizzed gambling turning them off of sports and I have to agree that it's getting beyond ridiculous at this point, just sheer naked capitalism exploiting peoples addictions in such a gross way. Looks like I'll be on pirate streams forever then

Nah all they had to do was find a quiet place to chill on their phone, instead they got caught doing something too flagrant and there will be broader crackdowns on "idle time", ruining a good thing for everyone. A tale as old as time. My last job had some really cushy off the books benefits but a couple people just kept taking things way too far and eventually corporate caught on and we lost that poo poo along with a slew of other things. I got out at the right time cause basically everything that made that job workable for me has continued to get dissolved now that the eye of sauron is gazing at the branch.

Yeah. I see some of that, but sadly there's way less "whiny babies" in that discussion than I'd like and way more "kids who got pretty screwed." A decent number of the posters who know their parents were poor are actually defending their parents about that.
