inpatient mental health services are an awkward balancing act between restriction and safety which are guaranteed to piss everyone off. being dragged off to an acute ward full of people having the worst month of their lives and told oh btw you can’t smoke here, and you can’t go to the vendies unless your consultant signs a form, is a little freaky when you’re, eg, acutely suicidal, but it may be necessary to stop you acting on that impulse. and the best thing is it’s rly hard to tell if it’s necessary or will make you worse

There was a smoking room on the ward - it may as well have been the living room. You could fingerpaint with the nicotene on the walls. Met an old institutionalised guy there too. He skipped school when he was a kid. They threw him in the asylum - it was just what they did back then. The man must have been in his 80's. Lived and died in a mental hospital through no fault of his own. Probably would have died on the streets if he had lived into the current tory era.

CAMHS is the underfunded specialty of the underfunded sector of the underfunded health service, comes with even more complexities than adult or older people’s, and is accordingly reliably abysmal. spose there are saints out there but I wouldn’t work in CAMHS for double the money e: re old Victorian asylums for fallen women etc. some of those buildings are still in service albeit now specialising in churning through admissions for brain problems that take months to settle in 2 weeks while keeping smackhead paedophiles for two years cos they sabotage all their placements and the trust is scared of the bad press of discharging them homeless. one such charming old building had to be demolished because a chunk of masonry came off and landed six foot from a CQC inspector, which is one way to get around ‘NHS timeframe’ Shogi has issued a correction as of 08:48 on Mar 23, 2024 |

Before my wife got her qualifications and was 'only' a low level CBT practitioner, her catchment area in the part of Newcastle she worked in meant most of her patients were employees at the local Amazon fulfilment centre it was horrible for her own mental health because you can only say "have you tried thinking about it different" to people in awful material conditions that they can't escape so many times before becoming disillusioned with the system. She got her qualifications and moved to a different NHS trust for a promotion which then has recently sold to a private company and is rapidly also becoming extremely poo poo for both therapists and patients. Anyway this country sucks is what I'm trying to say.
