quote:

During the 19th century, vices such as gambling, alcohol, and narcotics had been popular throughout the United States in spite of not always being technically legal. Enforcement against these vices had always been spotty. Indeed, most major cities established red-light districts to regulate gambling and prostitution despite the fact that these vices were typically illegal. However, with the rise of the progressive movement in the early 20th century, laws gradually became tighter with most gambling, alcohol, and narcotics outlawed by the 1920s. Because of widespread public opposition to these prohibitions, especially alcohol, a great economic opportunity was created for criminal enterprises. Organized crime blossomed during this era, particularly the American Mafia.[127] After the 18th Amendment went into effect, bootlegging became widespread. So lucrative were these vices that some entire cities in the U.S. became illegal gaming centers with vice actually supported by the local governments. Notable examples include Miami, Florida, and Galveston, Texas.

there was a lot of it and the attempt to get rid of vice made it worse because that just made the mob ultra-rich and politically influential when they took over everything that was outlawed

I'd say "make gacha phone games the only legal form of gambling" but they already have people paying $50 for enough in-game resources to not quite get the thing they wanted

that's why it should make you do it $1 at a time, so you get fed up with wasting your time and put as much delay into the dopamine loop as possible

It used to be all pear juice. I think they bulk out most juice blends with whatever relatively neutral flavored and colored juice is cheapest on the commodities market. I've seen it done with white grape juice too.

if we could only do third party insurance contracts on sports gambling outcomes, then securitize those insurance contracts, then create triple-leveraged inverse ETFs out of those securities, then sell options on those ETFs

then we'd be doing some real economic growth

recession arrived years ago for the poor you stupid bitch

you need to start using shrike82's bit and just imply everyone suffering bought it on themselves by being poor and therefor deserving of their fate. Shrike don't need to deny recession, he just posts through it about how successful people think everything is fine. It's the superior psycho posting style you dinosaur.

This is such a wild way to be, really

I kind of envy the dudes who can just convince themselves economy good when My Guy In Charge because they have this incredible ability to disconnect from historical events and material reality that seems like it would be really convenient for living

While the accuracy of this thread in predicting imminent doom has been incredibly low, it is still much better than the accuracy of anyone who has ever predicted we are in a new recession-free paradigm
