One of my favorite weird Japan things I learned since moving here is how much nostalgia there is for the 3DO. Coming across people who remember Night Trap and Way Of the Warrior fondly blew my mind.

night trap is just so bad. i got it on switch when they did the 25th anniversary version, hoping it would be that fun b-movie sort of bad, which it almost is, but it's so stupidly difficult that you have to put in a lot of effort to see all the dumb campy fmv stuff.

Very few of those FMV games were, and most were just softcore porn. Look at that video I put up, and look at how many "erotic" games there are for a system with only 300 of them.

I think the trouble with Bloodborne for me was that right out of the gate it was punishing in that way that says 'you're playing it wrong', to teach you how you're supposed to play it, but it meant that I was frustrated with the setting before I was enamored with it. It seemed to keep doing this. It always felt like a game first, and a world second. I did think it was very cool, and aesthetically it really is unique.

There was also the period in the late 90s/early 2000s when there were tonnes of handheld consoles that all got either wrecked by the GBA or completely murdered by the DS. Off the top of my head: Neo Geo pocket/pocket colour Wonderswan GP32 Cybiko and Zodiac (these were PDAs with downloadable games, sort of counts) Ngage and its successor that I forget the name of Game.com Gizmondo (lol, read the story on this thing if you haven't already, it's crazy) Only the PSP even attempted to put up a fight, until revisions of the DS buried it.

It was the DS getting a price cut, as it had great initial sales but so did the PSP and they were iirc fairly close in total sales until that change. Then sony released some truly dire and confusing revisions to the PSP and monster hunter couldn't keep it afloat because Japan still didnt understand online modes at that point so it had no major draw outside Japan.

What's funny is that out of all of those I think the GP32 had the longest lasting impact. It was a commercial failure, but it's adoption by homebrew communities ended up giving it second life as an emulation handheld, which led to the GP2X, from which formed a software catalog that spread all over the place from PSP to those cheap handhelds you buy off Aliexpress.

*turns chair backwards and sits down, crossing arms over the backrest* Sekiro isn't fun. It feels like a modern day Dragon's Lair: press a button at the right time or die. At first it looks like you have options, because it presents you with things like Combat Arts and Prosthetic tools, but you should almost never use them because you'll be punished for it. You're better off just pressing the button at the right time. You can move, and dodge, but it's more efficient to press the button at the right time. I've not felt any satisfaction or sense of accomplishment upon clearing an area or taking down a boss, just a brief sense of relief that it's finally over. I'm at Lady Butterfly currently and she feels beatable, but I don't think I care enough to keep trying, because it feels like it's going to be more of the same for the entire game. I get money when I kill dudes, but there's nothing to spend it on because the merchants don't restock their inventories. So I can't even content myself with knowing I have consumables in good supply to help me out, except the little spirit emblems, which I have hundreds and hundreds of, ready to power abilities and tools that I am discouraged from using, because if I just press L1 at the right time I'll be in a much stronger position. This games biggest flaw is that it feels like it requires mastery to make progress, and I don't want to have to master a game to experience it. I want to reach a reasonable level of skill and then work towards mastery if the game is entertaining enough. I've given it 20 hours, which I think is a fair shake, but I don't know that I'll continue.

William Henry Hairytaint posted:*turns chair backwards and sits down, crossing arms over the backrest* It will be more of the same. It's a hard game. Perhaps too hard for you. But from your description, it sounds like you are missing out on a lot of things. From your post, it sounds like you are missing a lot. For instance, you say you have prosthetics but get punished for using them. But for a fight like Lady Butterfly, they make the flight much easier for normal players. There are other bosses that always become easier with use of prosthetics. Many of them, actually. The same can be said for combat arts. The first boss you see after the prologue is trivialized if you use the mikiri counter, assuming you picked it up. Lady Butterfly is much easier with shuriken. And nearly every boss has something that can make it easier. Some use prosthetics, some use skills, some use items. The game isn't as flexible as a typical souls game but it balances that by having an actual coherent story. Also, if you are 20 hours in and at Lady Butterfly in one route, how far have you progressed in the other? Just randomly throwing #s out, I'd say 5 hours to get to LB would be a longish time but sensible. So 15 hours going the other way, so you should definitely have made it to the castle, if not to the first "hard" boss. Hard in that it seems to be the point where for many people the game clicks. There are skippable bosses on the way, but you have to defeat the ogre, then three other bosses, then you can get to that boss I mentioned. And there are a handful of other bosses you can run by on the way If not, then you are probably playing the game wrong in some way. Wrong in that you aren't understanding the systems or are parrying/blocking wrong or something else. You definitely don't need mastery to progress. I made it to the final boss in the game and never did the parrying/blocking correctly because I misunderstood how it worked. But I was able to get through via lots of other means. I could not do the final boss until I did learn how to parry correctly, though. You need mastery for the game to become relatively easy, though.

Sekiro is a game you can't really muddle through like the Dark Souls games, either you learn to play the game the way it wants you to play it (read: git gud) or you have a miserable time and probably don't make it very far. For what it's worth if you're on Madame Butterfly you probably haven't beaten any actual bosses yet Great game once you get the hang of it but until then it kinda sucks.

I ignored prosthetic tools almost completely in Sekiro and focused completely on parrying. I did use some helpful combat arts, though. Elden Ring gave me so many items and options, but all I really needed to do is dodge enemy attacks and then hit them back with my giant Berserk sword. At least during a first playthrough, my brain is too dumb to think about cycling through optimal consumables during a boss fight while trying to learn its attack patterns at the same time.

Speaking of Elden Ring, open world was a mistake. It wasn't that much fun to explore or fight in, and the devs knew it. So they give you a mount almost immediately to let you beeline to the actual fun parts of the game. FF7 Rebirth does the same thing.

The only other time you saw a glut of systems like that was the Atari2600 era before the crash. CDi was an attempt to do DVD ten years too early. The video games just rode one the coat tails. 3DO was an attempt to make video game consoles more PC like twenty years too early. It came about because PCs were suddenly viable video game machines and it was leaning into that tech. Except it was all too expensive and PC games were pushing hard against consoles still so they wound up with all the bad multimedia titles. Pippen was 3do except Apple, so worse hardware, more expensive, and even worse games. The Jaguar was the last gasp of a dying company that never did figure out what to do with itself and as such just made their own wacky hardware that no one was interested in. Commodore CD32 was an attempt to consolize the Amiga. Same results as the 3do except Commodore was in a more precarious state when they tried. The Playdia was an attempt to use all that fancy new multimedia hardware but do it as cheap as possible with every anime license that Bandai owned. This time they'd own the hardware and the software. It failed because an 8-bit system in 1994nwas a bad idea. Basically, everyone saw the potential of new hardware and thought they could get there first, with a healthy side of "maybe we can leverage what we're doing over there to here!" Thing is, the quantity of new hardware really wasn't unusual. From 1975 to about 2001 there were multiple new consoles and gaming platforms every year. It's why the concept of "console generations" is bullshit; it was a continuous flow and "generations" as they're typically used reduces it to a handful of platforms from a few companies and times then based on how they were marketed in the United States.

The worst part about the Sekiro prosthetics is that really only the shuriken and fireworks are useful and everything else is insanely situational or good for like one boss or two minibosses.

Ooh, time for my hot take on console generations: there are only 4 meaningfully distinct generations in video game history. The first is hardware games like pong, where the game is part of the hardware itself. Next is removable media games like basically everything from the Atari through the PS2. It's a wide span of time, but as far as how people used their consoles it was basically the same, you bought a video game the same way you bought a VHS tape. Third is the downloadable media generation, where onboard game stores had a selection of individual games to pay for and download. This also covers Steam which arguably kicked off this generation. And the fourth is console as a subscription service or streaming model like Gamepass or whatever Google's thing was called. This is still pretty new but I would bet in our lifetime we're going to see consoles that requires a paid monthly subscription to do anything.

A console generation is when the only console makers anyone ever cared about: Nintendo, Sega, Microsoft or Sony release a system, usually just a year or so apart so they can all be bundled together. They each represent a significant upgrade in terms of hardware performance unless you're Nintendo and don't need to care anymore. Atari can count but only before the Nintendo I aint' counting any Jaguar poo poo.
