It could, but frankly that would be doing most state level Republicans a favor. They already hate higher ed funding, and as an employee of a flagship state university I can already tell you we get so little money from the state and federal level (excluding research grants) that it is practically not even factored into five year budget projections.

This.

While I won't say that you can glean a justice's decision 100% from oral argument as they often work to test the extents of both sides of the argument, it was an eight person assault on trump's lawyer. A discord full of lawyers were all laughing at just how much everyone except Alito was dunking on him.

The whole hypothetical is silly because it’s not going to happen they aren’t going to give trump total immunity because they don’t have to they can just delay till trump gets in power again and then he makes it go away with the same result.

The thing I don’t get is why people just assume that dems who historically are decorum poisoned would continue to be so if the country had already ended at that point. The whole reason they push the civility crap is because they don’t want us to get to that end point and we can argue if they are right or wrong about that (I personally think it’s pointless.) but it’s another thing to say if they end democracy by making the president a literal king and there is no point to civility anymore that they would do absolutely nothing about it and just shrug their shoulders idk that’s a bridge to far for me. Once you’re at that point everything is on the table.

Something I haven’t seen discussed about this today is that the Supreme Court like Robert’s and Gorsuch was talking about “writing a rule for the ages”. It’s kinda crazy to me because I thought they were not supposed to legislate from the bench and that something like this would need a constitutional amendment but they seem to have nakedly dispensed that and I guess they are just going to make up rules for presidential immunity even though it’s not talked about anywhere in law or the constitution.

we already passed this point when mitch wouldn’t let obummer appoint a judge because of closeness to the election and then they rammed their own through on a shorter timeline.

what have dems done that even approaches this level?

If you think blocking a court appointment is the same thing as basically ending the government and becoming a dictatorship then yeah you’re right they haven’t done anything back to the republicans on that level your right.

It's kindof their job to interpret the constitution. They're responsible for giving all lower courts direction on how to address any immunity presidents and former presidents do have.

I think part of the appeal of the democrats to a lot of people is that they do try to respect the democratic process somewhat. Like, that's a good thing. I'm glad they aren't trying to overturn elections. The filibuster can gently caress off however, I feel like that's going to happen in the next few years.

Edit: I think they should play more hardball too but they should not tit for tat everything Republicans do because some of those things are very bad and having two parties doing that will accelerate things that shouldn't be accelerated

Right but if it’s not written in the constitution they shouldn’t be able to make it up whole cloth no? Wasn’t that their who ruling on the 14th amendment and why the issue was there was no written enforcement method. Its not just deciding common case law to just add actually the president is immune to certain things that sounds like something that would need an amendment no?

I don’t think they’re going to rule that Trump had/has carte blanche to do whatever he wants (cue crime montage set to 1980s pop music), but that wasn’t the point. Ensuring that his J6 and stolen documents cases get pushed well past the election was, and in that regard, the conservative members of the court are going to do him a solid.

As amusing as this hush money case has been, it’s small potatoes. Trump isn’t in any serious danger of receiving prison time even if he is found guilty, and none of the hogs, hog-curious, or poo poo-eating “it’s time to give the other guy a chance” centrists are going to be fazed by the outcome.

Trump only goes away if we defeat him at the ballot box, and while I would rather be in Biden’s position than Trump’s, there’s any number of stupid loving snafus that could tip the election to agent orange.

You're not crazy, but it was a carrot incentive: rather than "fix this or we'll cut you off" it was extra grants if states made an effort to improve their seatbelt use rates.

quote:

Seat belt incentive grants. The Act authorizes $500 million over FYs 1999-2003 for a new program of incentive grants to encourage States to increase seat belt use rates. The amount of funds States receive will be based on calculations by the Secretary of the annual savings to the Federal Government in medical costs, which result from the State’s improvement of its seat belt use rate. A State may use these awards for any project eligible for assistance under Title 23 U.S.C.
