I had tried to get into this maybe 2-3 times before, but the way it kind of just tosses you right into the middle of the story/seemingly unending amount of characters/it's slow pace, throwing it on before bed basically meant I never got beyond episode 4. But due to a lot of downtime now I'm up to episode 88, and safe to say this has probably ruined all other shows for me. Nothing really comes close to the intelligence of the dialogue, how it can switch between action and then a 10-minute metaphysical conversation, and most importantly the interpersonal relationships between so many characters who are uniquely themselves is amazing. I definitely had not seen a show that made me cry like LOTGH has a few times already in awhile, specifically twice.

Once I finish I will most definitely re-watch it again, to savor the good times and easier to pay attention to other things I surely missed this first time around due to the sheer amount of characters and information, even watching it in marathon fashion.

I was gonna also mention Poplan & Attenborough but thought they more pure comedy essentially, even though it's some of the best comedy ever. Poplan + Reuenthal up there as favorite characters for sure, but just how important Ruenenthal and Mittermeyer are to the overall direction of story.

Easily one of my favorite moments of entire show is the night Reuenthal first meets Reinhard and Kircheis in his attempt to save Mittermeyer's life. And Reinhard decides to tell him of his dreams, Kircheis turns to glare at Reuenthal and read his response.

Also looool

And does he have one fake eye? Feel like they never fully state that, only saying his mother attempted to harm him as child and then 'never picked him up again.'

Word yeah I knew they had mentioned something like that actually but forgot about it. I'll really have to rewatch the entire thing again knowing all the characters, they just throw so much poo poo at you the first 30 episodes and even beyond that it's too much remember with the sheer amount of characters.

Poplan just told Schenkopp he can take Reuenthal since he doesn't want the ladies of the Empire hating him. This loving show.

Yeah but Yang never picked up poo poo either, mans lived in filth till Julian showed up.

Reuenthal feels he has earned his position, unlike the aristocrats before him.

Real sad hours after just finishing. Tried watching the prequel + plan to slowly rewatching series to catch what I missed/the early contributions of Empire admirals/early plot, making me more sad.

I think the last ~30 episodes or so it slows down a lot. The first 50something episodes are my favorite of the plot overall for sure.

In my search for images from LOTGH you obviously come across stuff like tumblr/other posts/etc and the relationship of Reinhard & Kircheis is always the one brought up but never Kircheis & Annerose, which I mean clearly he was in love with her and Reinhard knew that as well. Maybe Reinhard is gay and loved Kircheis beyond their friendship, but I always saw Kircheis as just being devoted to Reinhard since childhood and his true love Annerose telling him to take care of her brother + sheer ambition of Reinhard that has even the best admirals awestruck made Kircheis believe they could accomplish the incredibly lofty dreams he had. I never saw the OVA's prior to Conquest, so I don't know if any type of romance happens between them but I wouldn't think they would have something in OVA and not anime itself. It's an extremely unique kind of uh 'love-triangle.'

Didn't realize how many episodes were in the other two "prequel" OVA's. It sounded like a few episodes were too but some the ones that were like the regular show, were very good. Should probably get around to checking that out.

knox

I don't think I could watch all of Neue These after having watched all of the original. Maybe the battles will be interesting enough to warrant checking it out in future when it's almost finished? I don't know I hate how the characters look in this digital anime, it's like the original can get across their personality to you to individualize everyone, whereas with digital everyone blends together fully. I guess a different type of anime with more action I would not mind as much, but the slow pace & sheer amount of characters highlighted the exact reasons I hate new animation.

Been watching some of the Gaiden episodes last couple days. Gaiden1 the first one I saw with Reinhard & Kircheis' first assignment, was as good as anything in the series. Though this murder investigation one is a bit slower.
But it's awesome to see their beginnings in the military and how it's been them vs the universe from the beginning.
I needed some Kircheis positivity in these dark days.

knox

I need a sequel where Felix Mittermeyer brings peace for all times; his father Reuenthal's ability, Reinhard's child for a best friend, and Mittermeyer& his wife (the most innocent person in the entire show) raising him with their morals. He's too powerful.

I started watching the OVAs because I'm still feeling how previous poster does about the main series, after finally watching it all last year. Definitely one of if not the best piece of entertainment I've seen, honestly.

I basically stopped watching OVAs (which I'm trying to watch in a specific order) once it got to Yang Wen-li on his first assignment since it's pretty boring compared to the previous Reinhard episodes on his first assignment, but I'm going to power through it soon. So far my favorite scene is Kircheis & Reinhard walking to some military commander's office and Mittermeyer & Reuenthal see them for the first time, staring silently while going over paperwork. Big gang moment.

I do like the improved battles with the CGI, but everything else feels worse than the original- the animation, voice actors, not sure if I'll ever watch whole thing. I have watched a comparison of the first episodes and it is cool there's subtle changes, like Oberstein not jumping infront of Reinhard during The Scene, which I guess matches the manga or novels more closely. But I much prefer the original animation and the HD remasters or whatever they are. I'm good with all the Gaiden episodes I have to watch and eventually rewatch series. Maybe when remake is done I'll check it out.

Is that not in his character in the books? I always thought it was meant to show that he wasn't just some scummy politician rear end-kissing his way to the top, he legit believed in Reinhard's ideals and was prepared to die to protect them/him.

vvv Nice, that's the opposite of how most book > film translations go.

I'm not sure what the difference means honestly but I saw many people comment on it. I think there is something to the theory Oberstein took Kircheis' gun for a reason, as he was somehow in on plan allowing Ansbach to get a weapon in- not to have Reinhard killed ofcourse but to ensure his place as Reinhard's main advisor and to allow him to make the cold decisions he knew Kircheis would not allow him to make. But It's never really expanded on in the series/it's pretty sloppy for someone like Oberstein, and I'm not sure how much detail is written in the books about that particular scene. It's just odd how on Oberstein's order Kircheis is forced to give up his weapon right before that event happens.

Some of the Gaiden 4 episode series are as good as anything in the OVA; ton of Reinhard & Kircheis beginnings, which besides the murder investigation one I couldn't get enough of. First episode of Silver-White Valley Kircheis breaks up a gang rape, gets jumped after fighting 6v1, and then Reinhard goes super saiyan and steps on necks, doing his best Hugh Thompson @ My Lai massacre impression.

Finished the OVA run a few days ago and still kind of processing it all.

I think the fourth season stretch is weaker than the others, but it ultimately comes together in this beautiful package about the messy state of history. All the pieces left hanging clearly exist as if to just say "yeah, those problems will come back, because history never ends." Reuenthal's son reaching for the stars is one of the most chilling endings of all time that hammers home the cycles of empires. Another page turns in the book of history.

Still planning on making my way through the novels but it really is an immaculate piece of work. Unlike anything else.

Yeah Felix is too powerful, son of Reuenthal to be raised by Mittermeyer the most ethical Empire character after Kircheis dies, & the most innocent character in the entire show Mittermeyer's wife. I envision him and Reinhard's kid being the next Kircheis & Reinhard leading the Empire into a golden age, following Mittermeyer's leadership.

You should watch the Gaiden episodes if you haven't already checked them out; they are completely out of order chronologically for some reason which is lovely but watching them in order starting with Kircheis & Reinhard's first assignments I loved the majority of it.

The rips I do have the quality changes sometime at episode 26, as I distinctly remember higher quality for certain parts of the Kircheis scene. I was never sure if that was re-drawn or part of the laser disc versions or something. But even when the quality is at it's lowest, it's never that bad. I mean it's 30+ years old and I'd still prefer the bad quality old episodes over the Die Neue These. Yeah the new battle scene CGI is cooler but at the expense of the character designs, nah.

knox
Oct 28, 2004

Yeah, it is a little jarring to go into redrawn scenes for big episodes/certain stretches. Since those episodes are really old I don't really have any issues with the redrawn aspect, but yeah the consistency is only issue.

Because you get to see Yang/Reinhard & Kircheis' military career beginnings; at least two of the 4 episode story arcs are as good as anything in the OVA. I thought the Free Planets stuff wasn't as good as those episodes, and not all 4 episode arcs are of the same quality, but you should definitely check all of the episodes out once finishing the OVAs. I can't get myself to start watching Die Neue; I did watch the Reuenthal v. Schenkopp 1v1 and thought it was cool enough. But I doubt I will watch it until it's finished & I've rewatched the original OVA few times. I dislike the animation (though the ship battle CGI is cooler to look at) & the character designs, everyone looks so similar compared to the OVA days where every character has their own expressions and distinct facial features.

knox
Oct 28, 2004

Yeah I mean I can understand the point they look similar, but not to the level Die Neue These is and I also think they look distinctual enough. Also I just think the animation doesn't allow for the human characterization the OVA can provide. Yang for example, appears totally different to me and not the sort of unassuming, laidback, humble 'hero' he is in the OVA compared to being basically a mirror to Reinhard in appearance & confidence as well.

hello good forums friends.

I want to get into LOGH, but I'm a bit unsure where to start, and with which sub-team go to with. Is there like an easy guide for the 'best' experience? I tried looking at the OP, but something created in 2004, with the last edit in 2013 probably isn't as correct in 2023

You should start with LOGH: My Conquest is the Sea of Stars, which was the first adaption of the novels released in 1988. After this, watch LOGH: Overture to a New War, which is like a special edition of the first 2 episodes of the OVA. After that you can just start watching the 110 episode OVA, starting with episode 3.

Once you finish the OVA, you should watch the prequels Gaiden 1 & 2 but in chronological order since I just makes more sense to me to watch them that way. Don't read spoilers/don't google search and read about LOGH just dive in.

It took me a few tries to get into LOGH. I knew of it's reputation, but I would throw on the 1st episode at night and end up falling asleep a few times; pacing is kind of slow and a lot of characters thrown at you. In 2020 during lockdown I started just marathoning it and around episode 8 or 10 I knew it was one of the best things I'd ever watched.
