Ah had one of those as well. Give it til 2014 and you will be able to import direct from Japan as the earliest ones will be 25 years old. That said I would budget on an engine rebuild as the RB26 while a great engine is not that reliable especially after 25 years of being thrashed about. Even then I would pick up the later 93+ crank as the oil pump nose is longer which is the main weakness of the 89-92 RB26. Fun car but can be ruinously expensive to run.

Just be careful with S12s. They have odd rear suspension so if you wanted to run coilovers then you have to fabricate larger turrets at the rear. Other than that everything mechanical from the S13 and S14 pretty much bolts on. Stick and SR20 in it and jobs jobbed.

It is a bit pricey but they go for about 10k in Japan if they are clean. Last time I checked there was this weird retro fad going on there and the 70's and 80's stuff was demanding large premiums if original.

I'd have a gunmetal gray one on TE37s any day, only thing stopping me is I dont have a garage to store it in and I honestly wouldnt want to park it out on the street.

Having owned a R32 GTR in the UK they are great as long as you don't care about the 80's interior. I used to drive home through some rural parts and throwing it into a corner and feeling it slide just in time for the 4WD to kick in and drag the front around the corner was a lot of fun.

KakerMix posted:

Chances are you can get it in the country no problem. Customs can't check everything and they don't care about cars over anything else. The risk is any time the feds can show up and take then crush your car after that. There is no statue of limitations, once your car is contraband it is always contraband. The only way to avoid this is to wait for it to be 25 years old. It can not enter the country until it becomes legal which only happens 25 years to the month of when it was manufactured. Come May all of the cars made in May 25 years ago become legal to import in the United States. They can not be brought in for sale as a typical car before that. Like was mentioned you can do some weird things if you are a dealership or museum but you won't ever be daily driving it and you won't be able to easily sell it later. [b]This is why you see a lot of 'store in Japan till its legal' on some import service websites. Sometimes makes a lot of sense too since you can buy the car before the demand peaks right when it becomes legal.[/b[

That is the plan just with it being stored in the UK with people I know rather than Japan. THe example of the R34 GTT for $50k, you can grab one from an auction in Japan right now for under $3k. So buy it now, wait and then bring it in. The also contraban thing sucks because it means I couldn't even get an old 180SX to autocross and just not register it ever.
