Noticed a small puddle of oil, which was dripping off the shifter. I followed the leak and can't tell where it's coming from http://imgur.com/a/JYrUr :ohdear:

E: I checked the oil and it's full.

I just installed a K & N air filter on my GS500. I can't tell if it's my imagination, but my engine seems to be running hotter than before. It came with an extra rubber piece and no explanation:

My GS500 is insured for $1400/yr (which is a joke because in Canada one can only really ride 8 months per year), and I'm after a Shadow 750, and I called my insurance company, and it would be $2400/yr.

$2400/yr

:cry::respek::wtc:

Edit for context:

Ontario licensing goes M1 for 3 months, M2 for 18 months, then full M license thereafter, and there are tests to jump to each of these.

I'm 29, have an M2, no crash history.

What I'm saying is I'm not a 19 year old with a litrebike and a learners permit. gently caress insurance.

Just noticed brake fluid is suddenly leaking out the top of my bike.

The level is still above the line, I popped off the top and there was a little plastic fleck floating around. And it looks like the plastic is actually corroded. What the Christ...

Why would this become a problem now? The brake fluid was changed in Oct of last year.

I like my GS500, but the seat is making my buttocks cry. Corbin used to make a seat for the GS500 pre-2001, and I have a 2005. It seems like my options are limited to general purpose seat covers like the air hawk.

Has anyone used one of these, or equivalent?

Are they worth it?

My GS500 just passed the 10,000 km mark (just over 6,000 miles), and ever since a few weeks ago, I've noticed a new clicking sound in time with the engine. It doesn't click with every turnover though. Sounds random, a little like morse-code, noticeable at idle:

code:
chu gga chu gga chu gga chu gga chu gga chu gga chu gga chu gga
clk clk clk clk clk clk clk clk clk clk clk
A friend thought it might be slightly loose valves, which is ok, but was confused why the clicking sound doesn't occur on ever turnover of the engine.

(PS what is the technical (or 'more correct') term to describe the engine turning over chugga chugga chugga?)

I was going to change my front brake pads, when I realized they didn't need changing (the notches were still deep, lots of pad left). Like a true scientist an idiot, while the pads were out of the caliper, I pumped the brake lever, just to see the pistons move. Cool! Now the pads won't fit back in (let alone getting the caliper back on the rotor), so to push the pistons back in and make room...ok, I'll open the brake fluid valve on the caliper, push the pistons back in while collecting the brake fluid in a clean container, and pour it back into the master cylinder. Now I have enough space to slide the pads back in, and get the caliper back on the rotor.

Victory!

Except now the wheel doesn't spin as freely. If I spin the front wheel, I get a revolution or two, but it's clear that the pads are tight on the rotor.

How do I fix this? There isn't any more brake fluid than there was before. In fact there's probably a teenie bit less. And if there was a load of air in the line, wouldn't that make the pads bite less? The lever doesn't feel spongy.

If my GS500 sits for more than a week, it won't start. The engine turns over and over but doesn't actually fire up. Eventually the starter just clicks. At that point, push-starting it always works. If I'm using the bike every day, there's no issue, it starts every time.

Is this a battery issue? Carb issue?

If I preload the shifter with a bit of upward force, when I shift up I hear a barely audible click.

If I don't preload the shifter, when I shift up I hear a clunk.

Explain.

(I'm guessing that, as I disengage the clutch, if there's a few milliseconds of time before I gear up, it allows something to slow down, which isn't the case if the shifter is preloaded.)

Maybe it's a matter of technique, but getting my vstrom on the center stand takes everything I've got. Once I almost got stuck in a parking lot because I used the center stand (for some reason) and it was on a slight incline. Couldn't get it off the stand without really straining and making funny faces.

So I've got the vstrom loaded with me, MY GIRLFRIEND, hardcase saddle bags, and a topcase. Loaded.

On our trip we encounter some short and steep hills, think rollercoaster, and in one of the valleys I heard a scrape (the bike was upright, wasn't the pegs). I'm not sure if the bike bottomed out or what. The bottom skidplate wasn't scratched up. Maybe the rear tire touched the spot under the seat? Is that even possible?

I have a similar question. I've had to push start a number of times, and I've noticed that, while the bike rolls easily in neutral, putting it in 2nd and rolling it with the clutch disengaged (lever pulled all the way in) takes slightly more work, and I can hear something softly clicking. Why is this?

There's a strategy to picking up heavy bikes. Face away from the bike, with your back to the seat, crouching, one hand on the grip, the other somewhere on the tail. Then using mostly your legs, you lift and walk backwards.

So sometimes I'll come up to a 90 degree turn, turn super late, and drop the bike way over, and then catch it with the throttle.

I do this every time I enter/exit my parking garage. My parking spot is at the top of a 5-floor square spiral, so that's like 20 consecutive 90 degree right (or left) turns.

I need to make sure I have enough throttle to sustain the lean angle without falling over. I've almost hosed it up a few times. What I found was important is to always have the engine loaded (clutch engaged clutch at least partially engaged) and at least some throttle throughout. What's dangerous is that first 1/16th twist disaster zone where no throttle becomes some throttle and the bike jerks forward (or slows abruptly).

Any way to lessen that zone?

Edit: I seem to remember some gizmo that applies some percentage of throttle for the first 1/2 twist, something like that. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Oops, yes, this. I said "clutch engaged" but I meant "clutch at least partially engaged". Keeping the revs up and steady seems to be my problem, the throttle control always seems so twitchy. (I'm still a nub so I guess that'll improve over time.)

Yeah that's the one. Seems like a decent idea, assuming you're not at the track / pulling wheelies / jumping over 12 flaming school buses. I suppose making the throttle less responsive might suck a bit of fun out of the bike though.

Same happened to my vstrom 650. I smelled oil on the ride to work. No oil pressure light, or warning light of any kind. Checked the sight glass and didn't see any oil at all :aaa:

A friend helped me tilt the bike (the site glass is on the right, opposite the kickstand) and so there's oil, just below the sight glass (lower than L). I topped it up.

:ohdear: Topping up 4500km old oil with new oil of the same type is fine, right?

With engine braking and a bit of awareness and forethought you might be surprised how little you'll use your brakes in regular city riding. That could require a bit more finesse with the clutch hand though.

When I started riding I'd get a little overzealous with engine braking and had the rear wheel lock up once in a while. I had to keep reminding myself that engine braking was essentially rear-wheel braking. That and I wasn't amazing at rev matching.
