So I'm wondering if the reason EDGE exists now is because they know once they debut LTE-Advanced that people will realize it's faster than their terrestrial broadband by a factor of 2-10 times, and they're trying to get as many grandfathered Unlimited Data users to give it up as they can for the ability to access the newest phones? 100Mbit to 1Gbit isn't very attractive when it's got a 6-8 gigabyte ceiling on it.

Recently upgraded to a G2, and had to take the first one back. It wouldn't hold a reliable wireless signal to any source, including my home router. It also seemed to bleed battery life like it had a goddamned hole in it somewhere.

The second one's WiFi is perfect, but I noticed it was still bleeding battery life...and I found out why. Chrome. I've replaced (well, disabled) Chrome and replaced it with Firefox for Android and Dolphin Jetpack and all of a sudden Chrome's no longer showing up on battery statistics of taking more of my phone's power than the screen (seriously, at one point it was something like 33% to the screen's 21).

There's evidently a way to get Chrome to behave by enabling Developer Flags, but no matter what I did in either the release or beta version of Chrome, even using ADB Debugging, I couldn't get that option to become 'enabled' for me under the "Flags" tab on the phone. Oh well. I'll make do with Firefox.

http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-4/260857-chrome-draining-battery.html

Some people say the browser is behaving for them and only taking 3-5%. Mine was routinely taking 25%+ and occasionally even drawing more from the battery than the screen. The first G2 I returned (the one that couldn't hold a WiFi signal) drained 10% of its battery on 4G while I was standing in line for a movie, and I've got screen brightness at 20%.

I haven't rooted the second phone yet, but when I do, installing Greenify will be one of the first things that gets loaded.

You can turn your phone into a hotspot - legally by paying Verizon for the functionality that should be enabled to begin with, or quasi-legally (it's legal to alter your property, but Verizon's TOS technically ~forbids~ you from doing it) by rooting your phone and uploading an APK to it.

It's also free on their "More Everything" plan...for now (probably as an enticement to get off Unlimited). Since I'm still milking the Unlimited Data tit simply because it annoys them to ask me to get off of it, the same functionality on my phone would cost me loving $30/month.

There's the Best Buy way, and there will always be the full retail avenue, you just ideally want to wait a few weeks/months until the 'new hotness' goes on sale for ~$100-200 off.

Just means you really have to plan on using the phone for a while.

"Well, I'm aware of the fact that I'd have to buy one at full retail, which I don't have a problem with - and then I'd put the other on an installment plan, at which point 8-10 weeks from now I could use the Prepaid Visa to pay down the difference. I'm calling to, well, to be honest, to make sure that there's nothing in this deal that'll allow you guys to cancel my Unlimited Data. Yes, before you tell me I only use ~2GB/month, and I could save money by getting off of it, please keep in mind that I have it because I enjoy having an 'emergency' connection to the internet whenever I need it, plus I now have a car that has all sorts of nifty 4G functionality I can take advantage of. So...do I have all the little nickel and dime things down?"

"Yes, sir...*except* for the fact that while we could upgrade your unlimited data line no problem, keep in mind the second phone must be added to a *new line* on your account."

":what:"

"Yeah, we'd have to give the second S7 Edge a brand new number, and that'd cost you an additional $9.99 per month."

"So...I pay $792, plus $40 to activate both phones, then ~$95 in Virginia sales tax for both phones, then $66-99 for two monthly installments while I wait out the 8-10 weeks for the $792 prepaid Visa, then I'll have to pay an additional $119.88 per year before taxes and whatnot for a new line I don't need, giving up an ultra-rare 703 mobile number in the process that everyone I know already knows by heart when they need to contact me."

"Yeah, it doesn't make sense to me, either - but that's the deal. Oh, but we *would* offer you $20 each for the LG G2s you'd be upgrading from!" :v:

Tears for tiers, indeed. Oh well, guess I'm waiting a few months until they knock a few hundred off the MSRP.

The final nail in the coffin for ULD is probably going to be 5G. That's going to be way faster than most people's broadband connections, so I could see their justification for not wanting ULD to extend to it. Then again, if there was a way to continue on 4G/LTE-A, I'd probably elect to do that.

He'll, I'd be tempted to use it as a wireless modem if it cracked 500Mbps, let alone up to the 1-10Gbps range.

Or they're going to keep ratcheting up the cost by $20/month every 6-12 months until it reaches a breaking point for most holdouts.

I might actually jump at that simply so I could have more flexibility in loving around with my current Frankenstein plan.

So Duckman - my LG G2 has a single chip (almost invisible unless you look closely) from a no-case drop that miraculously didn't manage to crack the screen, and the back is still flawless - will that single small chip potentially disqualify me for having a phone in 'good cosmetic condition?' Or will that be up to whether or not the rep I speak to had a bad day or not?

Also, does being on ULD (and wanting to stay on it) screw me out of this deal?

Okay, so I put in my order for a 128GB Black Pixel that should come sometime before the heat death of the universe at an official Verizon store - not a branded retailer store - and told 12/16-12/20+ for a ship date. My concern is, they kept speaking as though the trade in was a 'sure thing,' but said I had to go through the website. I do not see the dialog/link they're speaking of that would allow me to put in the information on how to request a mail-in box to ship my old LG G2 for the credit.

Duckman, did they just tell me what I wanted to hear so they could register a sale and broom me, or is there a link I'm not seeing as to request the box, and/or do I have to call Verizon's 1-800 number and manually get things rolling?

EDIT: Never mind - I found the link, and Verizon is offering $200 for the trade-in value (still more than one would *ever* get for a G2 now), not $300. I think that might be worth a call to ask for the extra $100 credit as a good faith gesture for being a customer for 15+ years. I really don't think it's much to ask for an additional $4.17 credit to be applied for the next 24 months. All they can say is 'no.'
