My problem with the Unreal games getting delisted is simply that I can't understand why it's happened. With other games, it's licensing of some sort (eg Chronicles of Riddick being an existing IP meaning it has a limited shelf life, and it's kinda hard to repurpose the game without that licence), but unless there's some absurd royalties agreement with someone, I just don't get why the Unreal games need to go.

Weirdest thing for me is that the original games have dated, for the most part, really well. Maybe Tim doesn't like the fact that the original engine still stands up with custom renderers and the decades of cool mods makes DLC in modern games look stingy and overpriced

Convex

It's 2024 and I've only just realised that you can deactivate the Jump Boots in BLOOD when not using them. This reminds me of when I found out that the beserk packs in DOOM still work after the red tint wears off.

Should've read the manual

That's a good strategy, thanks! I probably wouldn't have even realised this if not for playing Fleshed Out which practically relies on conserving jump boots to progress through several of the levels.

That's fair. I'm an old rear end that used to sail megagames and gamescopyworld to get NO-CDs so I could burn my original multiCD releases into a single DVD for easier installing. Funnily enough there were games that had no copy or even DRM at all so it was just a matter of copy/pasting everything into a folder and burn (like UT2k4).

DOOM became one of the biggest games of all time not only because it was awesome but because it had no copy protection. Had it required a codewheel or something, yes it would have been cracked, but the lack of any barrier to entry meant that my Dad's computer repair guy offered to pre-install the registered version on our new PC free of charge. Years later I have bought more copies of the game than is healthy despite getting the original game (and it's sequel) free of charge back at release.

I had a legit copy of Doom 2 and Ultimate Doom. I didn't even know about software piracy back then and I don't even know how I would have obtained it since CD burners weren't a thing and there was no way the internet connection (did I even have an internet connection at that point? I can't remember...) could have sustained the download. Was there a multi-floppy release?

That's a you problem, Doom was designed for mouse and keyboard (albeit not the WASD layout we're used to today).

I have a floppy copy (lol) in the loft right now! I think Ultimate DOOM and Hexen, which released in 1995, only came out on CD-ROM though

edit: that said, the original DOOM was on floppy and episode 4 was a free patch (was this the first ever DLC?) so would have been easy to get around

also :same: with regard to the Gears games. I tried 1, 4 and 5 and it feels like I'm just replaying the same gameplay sequence over and over again with some unreasonably buff people wittering on over the top of it and I just don't get the appeal. At least the newer ones have some colour though, Gears 1 was incredibly boring to look at. That early Unreal Engine 3 era where everything had to have a muted grey, brown or green palette really sucked
