LGR has you covered.

The game's pretty terrible. Rushed to release before it was ready after an over-schedule development process, the final release being full of bugs and questionable level design decisions like secret walls being mandatory to progress through the stage, or the ever-classic "switch that opens a door halfway across the map without indicating as much".

That actually fits the source material to a T.

How is anything he's saying worthy of the moniker "shithead?" Making a character that's just a blank slate is incredibly poor characterization, and I imagine early FPS fans would be incredibly aware of this.

Prisoner 849 from Unreal is a woman, and is also a blank slate (beyond "was present on a prison barge that crashed on Na Pali"). Does that mean that 849 is an example of good female video game characters? Hell no! We know barely more about Doomguy or Gordon Freeman, and the amount of characterization that goes into them went into Bella Swan.

Blank slate characters definitely have their place in gaming, but claiming a blank slate character that happens to be a woman is an example of good writing is just patently false.

No, it isn't. That's the entire point of Anita's video - even if we have blank slate characters, their gender, race, agency, etc matter in terms of identifying and working with them. It's the kind of thing that's easy to miss if you're a cis guy who has everything match you, but these broad strokes of identity matter to people not commonly represented.

Additionally, American equating a blank slate with a burka is incredibly Islamophobic. Women aren't silent, aren't suddenly not people, when they cover themselves.

So I finally finished Plutonia and now I never ever want to see a revenant again. What's a good baby's first unofficial WAD? Looking for something to spice things up a little, possibly a bit easier (or actually just less annoying) than Plutonia on HMP. Back to Saturn X? Scythe? The above mentioned Doom 64?

RyokoTK posted:

Scythe, definitely.

Scythe is perfect, thank you! I ran it once just to make sure it was working right and before I knew it I had died on MAP06. I really like the small, focused map sizes and the difficulty is perfect (playing on UV currently as recommended!)

It's kind of weird that some of the level text doesn't seem to display right though. Like my saves say they're for the Crusher or the Gantlet or whatever instead of the actual map name, and I received the original Doom II intermission text before MAP07. The actual loading and score screens display correctly, though. Is that a problem on my end (GZDoom on OS X) or is that just a thing with this WAD?

Arivia
Mar 17, 2011

Cat Mattress posted:

The real answer is that Scythe does not have any intermission text or even level names in text form.

Remember that level names in Doom come in two forms: one that is a text string (hardcoded in the vanilla executable, can be changed by DEHACKED/BEX/LANGUAGE/MAPINFO/etc.) and one that is a graphics. The former is what is used in the automap, and in ZDoom it's what is shown in the savegame info box. The latter is what is shown during intermission (*LEVEL* completed, entering *LEVEL*).

This duplication allows to have stuff like the Circle of Death/'O' of Destruction! gag.

Anyways, Scythe has no DEHACKED, BEX, LANGUAGE, MAPINFO, or any other way of changing the actual text strings used in the game.

Scythe 2 does have DEHACKED, but only uses it for custom enemies. No changed text strings.

The unfinished Scythe X is the only one in the series with changed text strings, but that's only for the first intermission (the one before MAP07). Spoilers: there is no transphobia in it, only the bog-standard Doom storylines about teleporters and demons.

Okay, thank you for explaining! This is my first unofficial WAD, so I'm new to all this stuff.

I remember hearing poo poo about some guy visiting Ion Storm's office during the Daikatana development and being shocked by the texture work. Like, in a bad way, as in people were working way too hard on super detailed high-res textures that wouldn't look anything like that resolution in-game. The implication was that nobody was experienced enough to really know what they should have been doing.

It's an anecdote Romero tells during the Dorito Pope's article on Ion Storm: https://web.archive.org/web/20061225123829/http://www.gamespot.com/features/btg-daikatana/index.html

They hired a bunch of artists who had never done games texture work before and had no idea about economy, so they made 4096x4096 candle textures and stuff. Was absolutely killing the game. The same problem happened to FFXIV 1.0.

Are TNT and Plutonia any good? I remember them being pretty hard and gimmicky, but overall not that bad.

I just finished Plutonia. It has good parts but it's really gimmicky in a lot of places like you said. A lot of the levels play like they just placed revenants at random, added some keys and called it a day. I'd be hard pressed to recommend anything except MAP11. Beyond that, all you really get out of it is saying "Yay I beat Plutonia!"

There are some pretty bad errors in Plutonia as well. Like Odyssey of Noises is really keyed backwards, and would be much better if it went yellow blue red with the current placements.

TNT was okay but not great. It has some fun levels though, like Wormhole.

I'm glad I played both, but I'll likely never touch them again.

But also like Doom, you only get to play it the first time once. Don't look at walkthroughs, don't worry about being optimal (although do keep a lot of saves) - just do what you want to do, and see where that takes you. If you're talking level packs, you can't go wrong with Memento Mori 1-2, since they were designed for coop. From what I understand (full playthroughs of both are still on my backlog), 2 has aged better than 1, but they're both still good. It's successor WAD, Requiem, is also pretty good. For something more modern, you could check out Back to Saturn X, Episodes 1 and 2, though those aren't specifically designed for coop.

Alternatively, if you don't mind 10+ hours of pain to get through 1 level, you could always dig up a copy of Chillax. :suicide:

So we gave multiplayer Memento Mori a go, trying UV on the listed stable build on Zandronum's web page. It worked okay, but we started noticing some odd stuff on MAP02. The lifts seemed kind of glitchy - like you'd step on and immediately appear at the top. And the blue key door couldn't be reopened after the first time - after awhile it just shut, and there was nothing that could be done about it. I tried restarting the server, but that didn't fix either issue.

I also checked for known compatibility issues for MM, but all I found was a note that it needs "find shortest textures like Doom" turned on for MAP29. Trying that in the compatibility flags didn't help, either.

Trying to figure it out, I played through the same map single-player in GZDoom. The same issue happened with the first lift, but the blue key door opened, rising into the ceiling, and stayed open. So there's obviously some sort of issue with Zandronum, I guess. Does this sort of thing result from a misconfigured server (and if so, how can I fix it?) or is it maybe just Zandronum? I know the stable version of Zandronum is years old in comparison to the GZDoom codebase, maybe it's worth upgrading to one of the 3.0 betas?

PS: The balance in multiplayer Doom with pickups seems weird. Like there's just not a lot of ammo going around. On UV with two of us, we were often running out and punching pinkies to death. Is this common and intended, or an issue with Memento Mori, or should I have turned on item respawns or something? MAP02 had two shotguns and one chaingun, which makes for an interesting balance. Talking to each other and going "okay you take that health kit, you need it more" is pretty great, though.
