If I want to buy Applecare for a new MBP after the fact, does it matter whether it's a retina or not?

Sorry, I was actually trying to figure out if I had to buy a different Applecare for Retina MBPs.

If you click on "Buy Now" for the Retina or the non-retina MBP, you'll see the part number for AppleCare for either machine is exactly the same.
Thanks! Super useful.

How can I verify if there's a problem with the harddisk in my 2011 iMac?

Attempts to copy a large file are failing, and I'm getting this in the log:

quote:

kernel: disk1s2: I/O error.

:(

EDIT: If I have to get this thing replaced, any idea what it'll run me?

Disk Utility showed everything as fine, which was suspect to me. Smarty Utility showed a bunch of errors, so thanks for pointing me to that utility.

I put in a new harddrive, but now apparently the iMac fans want to run at full speed. Googling it suggests this is a common problem -- anybody run into it before, and how did you fix it?

The most consistent rumours have pointed to September - October for a while now (possibly to coincide with the next iPhone event?). I hope there's truth to this because my 2008, heavily-used, full-to-bursting iMac is becoming increasingly temperamental and I've been waiting to upgrade for a long time.

Even if the next update is a Mac Pro-style half-arsed affair, I'll probably be forced to pick one up. Add to the matter that there will presumably be a gradual move to retina screens from here on out, as someone who buys a computer every 4-5 years it might be hard to feel satisfied with either the 'last' generation of non-retina machines or the 'first' generation of retinas and any teething problems that might arise.
Rumor mill is divided as to when the retina screen iMacs will arrive. Some sources are saying it won't be this update but the subsequent one.

On another note, iMac users -- what are the normal operating temperatures for your Apple-provided SSD or HD?

I actually just really want a guts-updated version of the current model. No "retina" (isn't the iMac already at that resolution?), no "even slimmer" design, no soldered-in RAM, no teardrop shape...if there's some goony new thing, I'll just grab one of the current refurbs when they get even cheaper. Anything's an upgrade from my 4-year-old C2D!
Last I heard, rumors were the retina iMacs wouldn't be ready until 2013. I'd like to be surprised, though...

Appreciate all the feedback, everybody. Two other random things:
1) Do MacBooks/MBPs these days still have that problem where, after a while, there are "marks" on the screen where the edges of the keys presumably press up against them? Any way to prevent that?
2) What's the favorite USB-C dongle/dock to connect to, well, most everything?

They’re not cheap. Most of the <$100 options top out at 30w the last time I looked. But, if you’re really serious check out the Caldigit TS3 line, the elgato thunderbolt 3, or pluggable thunderbolt 3 docks.

I was also upset at the price until I realized that a second charger alone was $100, and an appropriate tb3 cord is 20-30. Then I added up the price of my dongles that don’t really work that well, and I have two that were $70+ so you kind of get at least $200 of tech that works just as well or much better than the cheaper alternatives. I was spending about 30 minutes a week troubleshooting cheap dongles, then I bought that TS3 and I just plug it in and go. Plus, the convenience of just having a single plug for all your peripherals, which was a big deal for me.
Do these all have separate chargers, rather than charging on USB-C? (The chargers are not pictured, but it looks like there's some sort of proprietary charger port?)

Most of these don't seem terribly airplane friendly though, unfortunately.

By sleeve, you mean the Apple sleeve or something akin, or like a sleeve inside the backpack? You mind if I ask which model(s) you have? Any particular backpack?

I think I may get issued a company 15' MBP soon, but it's locked down and I don't want to put a bunch of personal files on there anyway. Carrying around two 15' MBPs seems heavy (not to mention it'd leave much less space for other things in any backpack) so trying to decide if maybe I should trade in my personal 15' MBP for something smaller.
