Smilin Joe Fission posted:I've read that on both the 2018 Mac Mini and the 2019 iMac, the size of the SSD has a significant impact on write performance, although the read performance is identical. These same sources are saying this only holds true up to the 1 TB SSD, with big gains going up from 256 to 512 GB (on the mini) and going from 512 to 1 TB on both machines.

Mac Pro update: 2/2 of the upgrades I ordered from eBay turned out to be busts. The GTX 780 I received was a slower model than advertised in the auction and the X5690 just… never showed up. The estimated shipping time on the latter was 2 1/2 months so I’ve only now been able to get the refund. Both sellers had thousands of mostly-positive reviews, so

Both of my Macs are from 2010. I do 99% of my stuff on iOS so I don’t really care. The Mac Pro is still actually pretty decent for gaming with a Radeon 580.

Any real reason to go up to 64GB, 2.4ghz, or the 8GB VRAM? All are pretty pricey upgrades in Canada. Bare Feats has some benchmarks up, looks like the 4GB video card bottlenecks GPU-dependent apps.

A Mac Pro with a single X5690 is roughly equal to an i3 Mac Mini in CPU performance. Of course, you can shove 192GB of RAM and a 5700 XT in there, too.
