A Carlos Tevez Mutiny prediction thread would have been almost as amazing as The Owen Hargreaves injury thread. To add some more substance, can't really forget the always classy Marlon King. As the Telegraph eloquently put it he groped a girl than broke her nose after she said no. He was at Wigan at the time and had his contract terminated, served 18 months in jail, and he's now back playing football for Birmingham City. The guy has 14 prior arrests on top of being a registered sex offender.

Ched Evans has to play football in order to be happy or successful? What's he going to do when he turns 35 and he can't play anymore?blue footed boobie posted:If anyone thinks Ched Evans playing football is going to lead to an increase in children raping people theyre a literal moron. The only reasons he wouldn't be allowed back into football are punitive in nature. Or maybe a football organization just doesn't want to lose money by being associated with a rapist?

To be honest, do you really have that much faith in the justice system? Evans probably got a lighter sentencing than your average person would have gotten (maybe because of his ability to sign a good lawyer, maybe because of his status) and, with the rate of re-imprisonments the way they are, can anyone really say prison in itself is rehabilitating people?

So a Belgian defender (Gregory Mertens) died from complications after cardiac arrest and there isn't really any other good place to talk about it, unfortunately. I think his death raises some valid concerns within football in particular, considering the volume of heart related deaths that have occurred either immediately prior to, during, or immediately following a game. Since 2000, there have been 51 sudden collapse/cardiac deaths of professionals or youth players. Granted, there's more reporting going on and there's more people playing the game (law of averages, or whatever), but 51 in 15 years is crazy. For comparison's sake, I did a pretty casual search for similar lists for marathon runners and cyclists. The statistics say that there is, at most, 2 deaths for every 100,000 marathon runners in a given race (which has a much higher volume/broader demographic of participants compared to professional football). Most of the heart related deaths in cycling happened after the athletes already retired from the sport. Lokeren (Merten's club) mentioned that they have to do thorough cardiac exams on players in order to participate in the Europa League. I'd be pretty interested to see what sort of testing they have to do (because if it's just an EKG, that poo poo's weak as hell, even if it's 12-lead). I'd assume they'd be obligated to do an echo as well, but can smaller clubs afford to pay for that sort of testing on all their athletes? And I'd also be curious to see if there were any drug screenings (both performance and recreational) done on these people. All in all, pretty hosed up.

All these high profile players in Spain are being hit by tax evasion cases because of an act created for the galacticos. The Spanish government wanted to attract similar players as well as wealthy foreign businessmen by having flexible tax laws that allowed foreigners the ability to be taxed as Spanish residents or non-Spanish residents. Non-Spanish residents pay less taxes on money earned outside of Spain, so players with tons of imaging rights and sponsorship deals (Beckham, Messi, Ronaldo, etc...) basically go above and beyond to market themselves in order to make money hand-over-fist outside of Spain. Too bad Spain is broke as gently caress now and they want to send a message. The law has been under review since 2009 so it's been a legal grey area whether it's still applicable or not. It's a little lovely form the Spanish government to do this to players while the law is still in the books and the players meet the qualifications, but it definitely is a case where people should have seen the other high profile players getting hit by these cases out of nowhere and read the writing on the wall. All that being said, this is nowhere near the Panama Papers or Harry Redknapp hiding money in a Monaco bank account under his dog's name.

The TUE list is pointless because those are the people that are more than likely following the rules. I don't know about Tevez and Heinze (it is kind of shady that two players for the same country are exempted for using the same substance), but Gomez probably had a legitimate medical condition that required treatment. You're not going to become Wolverine by using a loving inhaler. I think the jury is still out on dexamethosone. There's more evidence backing predinisone increasing performance, but that sample size is small. I've also seen what long-term prednisone use can do to someone and the risks definitely outweigh whatever benefit, if any, Nelsen would have gotten. The fact that you can get an exemption for any glucocorticoid (which is what both dexamethasone and prednisone are) instead of them being outright banned is indicative of how little they affect the integrity of a competition. My understanding of why WADA restricted them in the first place was as a means of ensuring the long-term safety and health of athletes rather than concerns over cheating.

I would be surprised if those are successful masking agents in the world of readily available mass-spec and increasingly sensitive/precise analyzers, but I honestly don't enough about the biochem of masking agents or current PEDs. It's funny, because Mutu got a 7-month ban and a fine for doing lines as opposed to drinking tea. But, that being said, you can't expect to change anything about all these players dying on the field if you don't do something to clean up the sport. You just wish that the rest of the world actually took these anti-doping test seriously rather than just make an example out of some 36-year old striker.

Genuinely surprised that of all the United youth products of that time, Gary Neville has become the most respectable and someone I look forward to hearing perspective from. Not to say anyone outside of Giggs has really done anything wrong, but Gary was the biggest dickhead to watch as a non-United fan. Giggs prior to the affair stuff always seemed so similar to Scholes as far as temperament. But maybe that's just my dumb old brain forgetting poo poo during his playing career.
