Dear god, please watch this movie. It's fantastic. And if you want to be able to watch Troll 2 not simply as an exercise in irony, but actually enjoy the film, you should absolutely see it.

Also while we're on the topic of movies about movies, let me heartily recommend The Pervert's Guide to Ideology, which is perfect if you, like me, were in a bit of a funk that, surprisingly, could only be treated with a psychoanalytical/philosophical exploration of film and society at large.

Holy poo poo Shoot 'Em Up was awesome. Thanks for reminding me about this fantastic movie. Definitely rewatching this soon. I'll give Stretch a shot but I'm definitely cautious cause I'm not a fan of Patrick Wilson myself either. He just has a really punchable face

It's on US netflix too. just added it to my list.

My biggest issue with Stretch was that it felt like the equivalent of cotton candy. It starts off sweet and novel and then by the end it's just this lump of overly-spun sugar that was all spit out by assembly line, and it's mostly full of air. The romantic "twist" was stupid and more than a bit creepy - who the gently caress spends their time between death threats and gun fights, texting to anonymous women with no pictures via dating websites? He should've been in Sex Anonymous or something.

Yeah, I can definitely see where you're getting that from. The cotton candy analogy is pretty spot on. Sometimes you just want some cotton candy, though!

Also, I agree, the whole romantic plotline was stupid and unnecessary but I felt it was pretty minor/benign up until the final reveal. So just pretend the movie ended 2 minutes earlier than it actually did and you're good.

Honestly I don't have a favorite comedy. I don't actually think most comedies are any good. Humor is great in non-comedy films, and I love TV comedies, stand-up, etc., but I just don't think the comedy genre of film is necessary or entertaining.

dik-dik
Feb 21, 2009

Yeah I mean it can be fun to sit down and watch a comedy with friends. Don't get me wrong, I'm not some humorless prick who lacks the ability to laugh (well, not entirely). I just don't think they're particularly memorable and even the best comedy movies are usually poo poo compared to decent comedy television (Bob's Burgers, Parks & Rec, Archer, Arrested Development, Always Sunny, early Community, to name a few shows currently on Netflix).

E: Okay yeah Dr. Strangelove rocked. Peter Sellers is one of the few actors capable of making good, memorable comedic films.

Also Airplane! just seems like a classic example of pandering to the lowest common denominator, which can be fun for action flicks but is insufferable for comedies, imo.

Don't get me wrong, I don't seriously want to be Jordan Belfort, or else I'd currently be working on Wall Street instead of doing what I am doing. I'm just saying that, to me, at least while watching it, the net effect was glamorization, not condemnation.

I think even in the arenas of sex and drugs, there's a sense of vomitous excess. They're not just having sex with beautiful women, but after a while deliberately banging the cheapest and scuzziest streetwalkers they can find. Near the end Jordan's paying a woman to shove things up his rear end and treat him like dirt because that's the only way he can get off. And similarly the drugs, it's not enough to get high, he has to completely lose all motor control.

I was honestly left thinking "Being rich would be great but I don't think I want to be that rich." It's actually a great picture of the obscene wealth imbalance in this country, or at least one side of it- these are the 1% and they're loving insane.

I get what you're saying, and on an intellectual level I completely agree but I'd be lying if I didn't leave the theater thinking "goddamn I would love to be obscenely wealthy." And honestly, given the option now, I would still take it. Maybe I'm just a lovely person, though

Can someone recommend me a decent horror movie? I've watched a handful, but most of these random horror films I haven't heard of are like gambling with my time. I watched and enjoyed The Den and that movie where the guy is trying to get his friend off of meth. Not a fan of Ti West.

Of what's available on Netflix, my favorite horror movie would be Let The Right One In. If you want satire/comedy horror, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is a really fun movie that I would also highly recommend.

If you can find it in theaters or streaming somewhere (I hear it might be on iTunes?), The Babadook is a really, really good movie. Also if you haven't seen The Cabin in the Woods, you should see that, and I also really liked Drag Me to Hell (sadly none of these movies are on Netflix but they're probably on other streaming services).
