On one hand, they used someone other than Portland's crazy mayor to play the mayor, but on the other, they replaced him with Kyle MacLachlan. I don't know, I think it's pretty funny that the crazy mayor is Mayor Kyle's assistant on the show.

Is there a way on the PS3 to make it remember your captioning/subtitle prefs? I like to keep them on and turning them on every single thing I watch is annoying. I'm pretty sure the Roku had an option to make them on by default or something like that.

Do they look better now? I tried watching them when they were added last year and it was horrible. I tried a few different episodes and they were all incredibly low res and super choppy.

Monkeyseesaw posted:Antichrist had the full-monty penetration scene. And plenty of foreign films retain their explicit sex scenes. It's clearly not a Netflix policy, it just comes down to whatever cut the studio negotiated them to have. Pretty much. Netflix had 9 Songs on there for a loooong time and it's basically hardcore porn with music between each scene. Netflix just gets crappy versions of stuff sometimes. I couldn't watch more than a few minutes of Amazing Stories because it looked beyond horrible and was super choppy. I'm watching Miami Vice right now and there have been a couple of episodes with similar choppiness or weird audio tracks. I think it's ending soon, so if you haven't seen Still Bill, I'd suggest taking a look at it. Very interesting, simple documentary about Bill Withers (if you don't know the name, I'll bet you've heard at least 3 or 4 of his songs before). It's pretty short and leaves you feeling good at the end.

I like the Keep as well- we'll never see it, but I'd love for Mann's original cut of it (all 3+ hours) to come out. There are so many elements and shots that are just plain cool- I love the part where the two guards enter the crypt for the first time and it pans out to reveal this absolutely massive interior space and Molasar's smoke form blows me away every time I see it, I still don't know quite how they did it. For every thing that works in the movie, there are probably two that don't, It has probably the worst sound mix of any movie I have heard- most of the actors are barely audible. It's also choppy as hell, but it's speculating on what's missing in the released cut that makes it pretty interesting- Why did the priest kill (and from the half second we see it presumably eat) his dog? The fact that it's never been released on DVD is why you should at least give it a try if it's on Netflix again because that's about the only way you're going to see it other than even crappier versions on youtube. It has probably the worst sound mix of any movie I have heard- most of the actors are barely audible.

I didn't enjoy the movie at all but I will say the salon scene is the only time I can recall movie violence getting to me. My wife works at a salon and I just had to turn it off and take a break from the movie after that.

God Bless America was a terrible, lovely movie but it was trying to be a comedy and the violence was done with a wink and a nod. Rampage is framed around a rant but there is no humor. There's barely any emotion at all once the killing starts. I think Boll watched security cam footage of real spree shooters and patterned it after that.

I've been curious in it myself. I love Netflix, I'm thinking about Amazon but I hate hulu. The biggest thing holding me back from Redbox is device support- I don't think they support Roku yet and I don't know if they're even planning on supporting PS3. I do have a LG smart tv but I never use the smart features. The fact that you can upgrade it to 4 blu rays for $9/month is a killer deal- you get what looks like a pretty close to netflix selection of recent run movies for $3/month.

It's about ~20 feet away from the router but there are a couple of old, thick walls in the way. Our old roku 2 had to have the bedroom door open to work and got three bars at best, this one keeps a solid connection no matter what. It also supports Super HD on netflix, if you're interested in that. My bedroom TV is a 32in 720p but I'm curious to try it out on the big one in the living room to see how it looks.

Pretty much, except it's the two dudes plus the angel and sometimes the redneck. I think I'm the polar opposite of everyone. I liked the monster-of-the-week format. Once they got into the big seasonal arcs, it kinda killed it for me. That and every person on that show talks like Bale's Batman. My wife really likes it and I caught a few episodes with her and the lighter ones are genuinely funny, and they're totally aware of the creepy fans. I think an episode in one of the later seasons is actually called "Slash Fiction".

egon_beeblebrox posted:I've reported Amazing Stories multiple times over the past several months about its jerky frame rate, and never get any response. I tend to watch it when I'm doing other things so I don't notice it as much. "The Doll," with John Lithgow is fantastic television. I've reported it numerous times as well. Between the framerate and resolution, I'm pretty sure it's the worst looking thing on Netflix. I hate it, because it's such a good show and deserves better. Not that I'm really blaming Netflix- they're probably just playing the garbage version that got tossed at them. Amazing Stories is one of those shows that could really use a TNG-style remastering.

I just didn't like it because it felt like it was screaming that it wasn't my grandfather's James Bond over and over. We get it, no gadgets, no new cars, almost no guns. Take that away and it turns into a dour, boring yawnfest. Anyone else on Comcast having trouble with netflix? None of my equipment has changed, but starting around when they added the new season of walking dead, I almost never get to HD anymore and most stuff doesn't make it past the sub-SD level most of the time. I've pretty much stopped watching it and I'm thinking about cancelling because it's honestly not watchable. I get 50+mb/sec on various servers from speedtest, so there's no good reason I should be getting stuff that looks like a 240p vid on youtube.

I don't think they care. I tried both Hola and a different DNS on my ps3 and while they work, I couldn't get anything in HD and a few things were actually window-boxed. I thought it might have to do with different TV formats but it happened on the Canadian feed as well.

mysterious frankie posted:I use Comcast. It was really high quality for me until the Steam Winter Sale, then quality was garbage for a while and now it's fine again. I'm thinking the fact that I did a ton of downloading that month was the culprit. We're upgrading out package later this week, so we'll see if maybe the restrictions on the 50 meg tier is a bit more forgiving, since it the marketing outright states it's for streaming and large downloads. I'm on the 50 meg tier and I've mentioned a couple of times about how I rarely get anything above 480p and most of the time during normal hours, it'll float back and fourth between 240 and 384. It sucks so much. I figure they're actively throttling now- if you read around, people are calling comcast and complaining about netflix speed issues and their scripted response is something along the lines of "Comcast doesn't support netflix".

Sarchasm posted:The Criterion stuff is ad-free, I think he was talking about how the ad breaks on other programming are much shorter than the ad breaks on broadcast television. I don't think I could ever stomach for paying for hulu. I don't know if it's still as bad but my entire experience with them was trying to watch an episode of Rick Steves' Europe. There was a 20 second ad before it started, then you got the themesong and him telling you where he was followed by 30 seconds of commercials and finally it came back for the brief overview of the things you'd see on the (30 minute) episode followed by 45 seconds of ads. By that point there had seriously been twice as much time devoted to ads than the actual show. I really don't know how they're still in business- I guess the access to current network shows or something but I'll sometimes watch stuff on crackle and it's completely free and has less intrusive ads.

Erebus posted:Or you could just scroll past things that don't interest you, the same as when there's a two-page tangent about some movie you don't give a poo poo about. The thread isn't your Netflix RSS. One of the last things I tried watching on there was some Rick Steves' travel show. Commercial before show begins, generic show intro (less than 20 seconds), commericals, ~45 second overview of the shows contents given by Rick, commercials. The last commercial break was listed at over a minute. I turned it off, cancelled my free trial and that's about it. Tried another free trial last year, wanted to watch a movie- boom- commericials. Middle of an actor's line? Don't care. Commercials! It's garbage and I don't really see how they're even around anymore. I know they have criterion stuff but that's not enough for me to want to see the same three commercials over and over again.

marktheando posted:What is Netflix's censorship policy anyway? What will they show and not show? No erections allowed I'm assuming based on Time Dissolver's post. Like Erebus said, they will show as much or as little as they are provided. They used to have 9 Songs completely unedited, as well as a couple of really explicit french titles. I'm still waiting for an improved copy of Amazing Stories- the one they have on there is sub-VHS resolution and movies at 10fps. I'm not asking for it in HD but it's pretty much the worst looking series in their library right now.
