I don't pay attention to every corner of the rock scene but it seems like in the last decade psychedelic rock made a comeback. Indie rock might not be as popular as it was in the 2000s but rock's still kicking.

Yeah I would have to think one of the Tame Impala albums is in my top ten. But who knows. 2010 alone has at least 6 incredible quality albums (Kanye MBDTF; The Monitor; This is Happening; Halcyon Digest; Teen Dream; Contra).

The original, and best, of the pretentious yelping indie boys, Dan Bejar, aka Destroyer, has a new album and it's apparently really good (haven't listened to it yet).

Everyone has an album or artist that turns them into a music obsessive, right? Shortly after starting college in 2002, I started to listen to better music. The internet played a big part in this... it was the first time I had high speed internet, iTunes had just launched, and Napster was becoming a thing. Destroyer's Rubies was the first alternative album that really hooked me, that I listened to on repeat until I'd memorized every word. I'm glad he's still around and hasn't turned to total poo poo!

Ya new Destroyer is good and has some absolutely hilarious lyrics. But the new Frances Quinlan (of Hop Along fame) album is even better imo.

As for my obsession, the album was The Strokes Is This It

Man I gotta say the new Tame Impala is not doing it for me. It's just aggressively mediocre. I've done 4 listens to see if I am missing something but I can't name a single song because they all sound the same.

The signed purple vinyl is also very pretty. Props to 4AD or whoever was responsible for getting them shipped (and even arriving early!) during all this bullshit.

It's really good. I haven't listened to their other stuff in a long while (their debut was on repeat for me for months when it came out) but I think this may be their best album? It is certainly on par.

Andrew Bird is great. Not music-related, but I am stoked for Fargo season 4, featuring Andrew Bird (and Chris Rock and Jason Schwarzman).

New Fleet Foxes is amazing. I can't get enough of it. Perfect start of fall album.

Music - Frances Quinlan (lead singer of Hop Along) was the last act I saw live before the pandemic. One of my faves:

this rock is dead conversation is especially stupid because capitalism just neutralizes all expression for the purpose of accumulating the most wealth possible in the shortest time possible so you end up with totally sterile pop music that all sounds the same because it is totally inoffensive to most people and therefore likely to generate the most money.

in conclusion, rock is dead, long live rock!!

Maybe you’re just making a joke, but I think pop music right now is more creative and diverse and well made than it has been in decades. I wouldn’t call it inoffensive either. There’s edgy pop music that is huge

by "pop music" i meant "popular", ie. charting, which was the original point. i don't think there is much debate that "popular" (mainstream) media presents mostly very safe and saccharine material. see the film industry also.

this p4k article about her departure is interesting:
Weiss went on to discuss her relationship with bandmates Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker. “They’re not evil people,” she said. “I just think the two of them are so connected and they really agree on almost everything, they just thought, ‘We’re gonna take this band somewhere and we want to be in charge of that, the two of us.’ I think I was a threat to where they wanted the band to go, and who I am, and that felt bad to me.”

Weiss added, “They had very specific ideas of what they wanted, and I just didn’t fit anymore. We couldn’t get on the same page. It was really hard, it was not something I took lightly at all…. But I love them and they seem happy. They’re doing the thing the way they want to do it. It doesn’t have to be the three of us; it could be this pure thing with the two of them.”
