Although hugely distributed and common, I think Yeti has a dog in this fight.

Ubik posted:And danbanana, I fully agree on the "DRINK IT FRESH" hysteria being not only melodramatic but distracting from unskilled brewing or packaging. Hoppy beers are obviously best consumed fresh, but if the beer can't sit on the shelf for so much as a week before totally falling off, then something needs to be fixed! It's surely a bit of marketing, but I've got to say that Enjoy By is ridiculously delicious. I have no doubt it would survive just fine beyond its date, and encouraging people to drink it as fresh as possible is not a bad move.

Sirotan posted:I didn't come up with the 'Great Beer State' motto and it was around way before this competition was. Even if it is a dumb internet poll (which it is), Grand Rapids organized a bunch of interesting events last year after they tied for first place with Ashville, including an exhbit at the city museum and beer made by Founders especially for it, and a 'Beer City USA' beer (with the same recipe just different yeast? can't remember) brewed at each brewery in town. I think the state tourism board even got into the act to promote Grand Rapids as Beer City USA. I think it's great. When your weather is that lovely, you just grasp for something to hold onto. Michigan is a badass beer state though.

Anyone else disappointed by Victory Swing Saison?

BriceFxP posted:I got this on tap and I found it was decent but unremarkable for a Saison. I thought it relied a bit more on the spices than it should have for it's type of beer, and made it feel like it was rushed. It was good one off drink, but I would not drink a second after it. Yeah, I picked it up a six pack and was unimpressed. Unusual for Victory to disappoint.

Occasionally I find certain styles inaccessible and it really takes a particular beer to change my perspective and opens up an exciting world of possibility to my besotted tastebuds..... That happened tonight. I've occasionally tried Flanders Reds without any true epiphanies or enthusiasm, but world has been opened by Rodenbach Grand Cru. Mildly tart cherry explosion in loving soul holy poo poo..... Amazing. I am ready to explore the sour world a lot harder.

Bag of Sun Chips posted:$9 for a berliner is a lot but how many other berliners can you choose from if you want a bottle of that style? Pipeworks berliners are just as expensive, Bells has the Oarsman, and that's about it. Fritz Briem if you're lucky, or Grand Teton Howling Wolf. Westbrook does Weisse Weisse Baby (which is awesome), but distro is limited. It's a pretty limited style in general, and consequently my favorite.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed already, but how the gently caress did Natty Ice win GABF Gold medal for "American Style Cream Ale?!" Is that a joke to which I am not privy? Edit: PBR won the other two medals in the category. Did Cream Ale change definitions when I wasn't paying attention? LeeMajors fucked around with this message at 13:08 on Oct 15, 2013 |

danbanana posted:It's a pretty vague definition. BJCP actually uses the term "lawnmower beer." I've always heard that maize/corn as an adjunct is a primary defining quality. I knew the definition was vague, but didn't realize it was that vague. Holy poo poo. I was expecting some Summer Solstice or something on there, and saw Natty Ice and nearly died of a stroke. Edit: Summer Solstice is listed on the BJCP as a commercial example. What the gently caress? And Natty Ice won? Ridiculous. FreelanceSocialist posted:We're fast approaching the point where no one actually enjoys beer anymore - they drink it to get Untappd badges or cellar it to one-up other idiots in BA circle-jerks. We are there. When Boston Lager is considered trash beer, we have truly jumped the shark as a subculture. I tried to get into Untappd and couldn't. I just sit quietly and drink beer and ignore everything else. gently caress it. LeeMajors fucked around with this message at 18:41 on Oct 15, 2013 |

Walking to the register with a six of Barney Flats in my hand, I noticed a familiar case behind the counter. Abandoned the AVBC for some Hopslam--didn't get any last year, and I feel like this year is better than the last ones I had in 2012 that were pretty astringent. Serendipity!
