It's ridiculous how much this game has ensnared me- I've put an ungodly amount of hours way too quickly in this game. Holy poo poo it is so good. This is easily, EASILY GOTY for me. Now that they have the general system developed I absolutely cannot wait to see what they do with the setting because if they end up creating a true full scale RPG and not like a Fable-style RPG (in regards to roleplaying/reactivity of the story/the size of the setting) then Capcom will pretty much forever hold the gold standard for RPGs.

I've switched between Strider, Ranger, Magic Archer, Fighter and Warrior and so far every single class has been insanely different in how they play. The way you have to approach fights changes so drastically depending on so many factors, and combat feels so goddamn good.. It makes every single other "open action RPG" seem like jokes- and the straight action games even moreso.

Despite being well into my New Game+ I've still missed out a bunch of things apparently, including a bunch of optional areas/dungeons -and- bosses(?).

I'm really wondering how sidestories/quests work since there appears to be some semblence of choice. how (ending spoilers)the "most valuable person" is decided for it alongside what happens if you pick the rear end in a top hat options.

Even the simple design of having a constant autosave and one save slot makes decisions seem so much more important/gives actions a lot of weight.

Capcom is weird as gently caress. They produce garbage like SFXT and then throw out this near-masterpiece with nearly no advertising. I really, REALLY hope this game becomes a success because it's just so obscenely good in all the right areas.

edit:

For Magic Archers, try using the Vortex Arrow combined with the Shadow Hold dagger spell. The vortex is incredibly strong and will drag literally every type of enemy other than giants into it. You don't have to fire it at an enemy either, and can just pin it onto a spot on the ground where you've put down the spell. It lets your party go bananas on groups of rough enemies and makes up for the lackluster damage of the class (outside of specific exceptions, where the magic archer does ridiculous monster damage)

Like every class there's vastly different ways to play them but that's what I used for my endgame where I had to rely heavily on my party to dish out all the damage.

The core system of the game is so incredibly good that the game's pretty much leading up to a potential masterpiece. However, the lack of world content/incentive to explore and quests hurt the game a lot...

Luckily, since the core is so good the game can go multiple directions as to improve upon it- whether it's a hardcore dungeon crawler or a better open-world RPG. If Capcom could team up with a team that had a great sense of building up a world (or go the straight dungeon-crawler route which would make the combat system even more important in sense of the small details in terms of long-term survival.) the sequel would seriously be a true masterpiece of the RPG/action genre.

Also, anyone care to post your "and then Dragon's Dogma really clicked with me moment"?

Having my lantern go out while in a cave fighting lizardmen due to crossing a stream of water that was falling from the ceiling.

Since none of my pawns had lanterns the entire cave suddenly went pitch black, lighted only by the fireballs that my mage pawn would cast every few seconds.

The fight ended with the fighter in the party grappling the last lizardman from behind shouting "Now, finish it!" as I made a madcap sprint with nearly no health in complete darkness towards the health bar of that pawn.

At the end, stabbing the sword through your chest doesn't kill you, it makes you immortal. It's why the previous guy pulled the sword from his chest and then was killed.

I posted it earlier but I always thought the ending was just some broken window fallacy. They create a crisis to keep the will of living going out of a sense of survival and forge a new Maker in the process. This is demonstrated by a lot of people in the game, but it was all towards defeating/understanding a dragon, when you defeat the dragon you defeat their will to continue down that path. The one fisher guy who has wonderlust demonstrates that people have the will to continue onwards of their on volition and don't need some bullshit reason to. I was really hoping the ending would you breaking that endless cycle of self-fulfilling destiny. The presentation of the whole thing was neat but the logic is just wrong.

Stabbing yourself does kill you, that's why stabbing the previous Senechal with it kills them. That's why it's also called "Godsbane". The ending really is exactly what you were hoping it was going to be, which is why some of the big romancable options state that the "world feels different" during that last cutscene. Your character is actively denying the chain by stabbing themselves, removing "God" from the equation of life entirely. Remember that pawns become human like their owners after the owner gives them their soul- which is what your character does in the ending as a final gift to them by dying.

Also hilariously the menu song/intro song is about this despite how little it appears to make sense/how little it actually makes sense.

edit: also like every single major quest in the game deals with the idea that simply survival isn't the only reason for living which is probably supposed to temper that theme. Julien is a villain for that exact reason entirely, and Salvation's whole 'philosophy' pretty much springs that "broken window" logic into action (which is why they're also the main villains!)

If you max out your affinity with the Duke he starts saying the line "To challenge the Dragon is to challenge me." or something to that effect when you talk to him- it's kinda weird but I think that might explain it a 'lil more. There might be more dialogue from the inbetween states since I handed him my Arisen's Bond but generally it seems like his intentions are entirely based on not actually fighting the Dragon at all.

It's honestly the worst for sorcerers. With every other class, there is at least SOME way to destroy the flying medals, as tedious as they may be. Sorcerors only have one means of physical damage, though: Bolide. And Bolide can't hit the flying medal (and does a pitiful amount of physical damage, anyway).

It's so exceptionally dumb to have an enemy that cannot be killed if you play a certain class.

Seism does 100% physical damage.

What the heck is with that weird lil nook in the cave under the well where it transitions into "Brightwater Cove"? Is that just something that's cut content or is there a legitimate way to get in that thing?

Also, a fresh fighter/mage duo is somehow way easier to play through as than a 4 fighter party. It's absolutely insane how much magic turns the tide in fights.

It was my interpretation that your "sacrifice" was ultimately pointless, that you only ensured that which ever Arisen was runner-up to you would just get a free ride to Seneschal-hood. All you really did was divest yourself of future guilt in the suffering of the world, and gave your pawn a chance at a normal, mortal life, albeit as you.

There aren't any Arisens after you, they're made by dragons and you just killed the poo poo out of the only one around. Also dragons are made by senechals so killing yourself means no more dragons either. That all the remaining arisens begin to return to their natural age after you kill the dragon means that the enchantment is gone- the world is returned to it's "natural" order instead of being doted upon by the Seneschal. I'd say the sequel is probably gonna be set in another dimension or land or something, depending on how one interprets the extent of the Senechal's power/how large the world 'truly' is.

Here's the press release for it: http://www.capcom-unity.com/neilgortz/blog/2013/01/23/delve-deep-into-terror-with-dragons-dogma-dark-arisen-this-april

Delve deep into terror with Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen this April posted:

Following the announcement of Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen last year we are now pleased to confirm concrete details about this expansion to the world of Dragon’s Dogma. Scheduled for release on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 from April 23 in North America and April 26 across Europe, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is the next exciting chapter in the Dragon’s Dogma franchise. Coming both on a physical disc and as a full game digital download, the title delivers a huge brand new area, missions, enemies and more, plus all of the content from the original game.

Just off the Gransys mainland is the cursed Bitterblack Isle and it is here that gamers will discover an underground realm, complete with new terrifying foes to face and incredible treasure to find as they embark on an all new quest. Owners of the original Dragon’s Dogma will be able to export their existing characters and all other saved data, to continue their journey as the Arisen and face this new threat that has emerged from the cavernous depths. Players will be able to take their characters to new heights, with brand new high-level skills and augments as well as all new weapons and armour sets. For those that missed Dragon’s Dogma the first time around, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen provides the opportunity to start their journey from the very beginning before tackling the all new content.

Furthermore, owners of the original Dragon’s Dogma will receive the following for free on purchasing Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen: 100,000 Rift Crystals, unlimited Ferrystones and the Gransys Armour Pack consisting of six brand new costumes.

Based on player feedback, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen will make the Dragon’s Dogma gameplay experience even more satisfying, with improvements such as easier travel and a more intuitive menu system. For those who already own Dragon’s Dogma and then purchase Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, these improvements will be automatically retrofitted to their original game.

So, what does Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen deliver?

All of the content from the original Dragon’s Dogma plus…

A massive new underground realm to explore featuring over 25 terrifying new enemies
More skills/equipment/augments:
Level 3 Skills
DD:DA provides each character class with a new tier of skills, giving players new devastating abilities and skills to master
Over 100 pieces of new equipment
All new high level weapons and armor sets for players venturing into the underground caverns.
14 new character/Pawn augments
New tiers of equipment enhancement
And there’s more:
Increased character customisation options
Item appraisal
Option to select Japanese voice over

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen will be available for purchase across Europe as follows:

April 26: PlayStation 3 both disc and digital versions, with the digital version priced at €29.99/£19.99

April 26: Xbox 360 disc based version (with a digital version to follow as a Games on Demand title in the Summer)

In North America Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen will be available at retail stores for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and as a download from PlayStation Network on April 23, 2013 for $39.99.

Unlimited ferrystones for folks who owned the original, and some kind of hinting at a fast travel system? Weird.
It's good to see that the DLC seems to be focused on strictly high level content though, since that's where the game's difficulty falls apart.
